With trembling voices and meek faces we climbed up an extra flight of stairs. Everyone knew who we were although we wore no card of iden- tification. lt was as plain as day-fthe freshies had come! Regular classes started and we decided that to hit the books was'nt such a task. Now the newness has worn off, and we are becoming ex- tremely proud of the way the freshman have adapted themselves to high school activity. The freshman class is represented in practically every organization including Band, Sunshine Society, G. A. A., Student Council, and the Mirage Staff. This Page Sponsored by DR. G. This Page Sponsored by DEHLER-HUGHES OPTICAL STORE, Fort Wayne, Indiana Page Twenty-seven lee e K 01,4 14re 511114094 Withoiit youth Democracy would never succeed: and without opposition youth would never develop: therefore New Haven has, for the past number of years, had basketball as its major sport. The Bulldogs have the distinction of winning the Allen County tourney more times than any other school. The New Haven Bulldogs enjoyed a successful season during l940-l94l. To show you how successful this season has been, we have arranged a sports broadcast touching on the highlights of the season and the individual achievements of the players, who were responsible for the fine record achieved. Thank you: Now we'll get under way. The Bulldogs started fast with a thrilling win over Leo's Lions: then added five more wins to the victory column before being checked by a strong Central Catholic team. This loss proved to be the beginning of a mid-season slumo which cost them a chance to win the Blind Tourney and the County Tourney. Finally hitting their stride with a win over a good Berne team, the New Haven lads finished strong with six wins in their last seven games. The most important of these wins and the one that probably gave the players and fans the most satisfaction was a 38-3l conquest of a Central Catholic team that had per- viously checked New Haven's winning streak. ln the Sectional New Haven drew Lafayette Central as tral as the opposition in the second round. The outlook was through good team play New Haven was victorious. In the s its first opponent, with Cen- none too bright: however, econd game, despite the ac- curate shooting of Miller, the defense Bolyard showed in stopping Washington, and the excellent play of the team, Central proved just too tough. So ended the l940-l94l season of the New Haven Bulldogs. The scores of the gam i are as follows. ' N. H. 28 .. .. .,,,.,,.......,, . Leo N. H. 39 ..,.,,,,,, Decatur C. N. H. 37 ,,,, ,,..... Doc will not only be missed because he was a great ball player, but also for his guidance as captain and his fine attitude throughout the year. No finer tribute can be given than to say Doc played for the team. Dick Lantz C993 playing his first year on the varsity turned in some fine perform- ances. Dick was just arriving when graduation interfered with a promising career. Melvin Hemsoth C663 the country squire, has done his share tor the past three years. Squire furnished us with some thrills this year, particularly in those overtime wins from Elmhurst and Decatur. The ability to hit when the chips were down would best charac- terize Squire Hemsoth. Kenny Hanefeld C553 has played on the squad two years. No player worked or trained with more diligence. Kenny's strong point is his ability to steal the ball from the opposition and dash down to score. Don Miller C923 the blond curly headed idol of the junior class is a new comer on the varsity squad. Mathemataically speaking Don is to a ball team what a sparkplug is to an engine. Miller certainly believes in giving what you have to give while you are in there. Next a junior with a flair for pretty girls and a love for basketball, joe Wright, C443 joe uses his head as well as his hands in the game of basketball. Are the Bulldogs looking for some good leadership? Might not be a bad place to look. Confidence is the making of a ball player. Bill Bolyard C773 found it and was hard to stop. Bill's speed enabed him to handle the ball well on offense and still get back to protect the basket on defense. Butch Stellhorn C913 is the only boy on the team big enough to eat hay. We all remember that game in which Butch made six out of seven fouls. l-le has a knack at it or a lot of luck. The big boys are surely handy to have around on a ball team: they seem to be able to get the ball off the backboard. Were we talking about New Haven's Piulldogs? Fritz Poeppel Cll3 has the tenacity and determination characteristic of them. Fritz could be counted on to hold the good shooters down and still do his share on offense. Art Hemsoth C883 the boy that can sneak them in from underneath deserves his full share of credit for the team's success. Art seems to know where the ball is going to be when it comes off the backboard. New Haven can use boys with Arts height and ability. A sophomore, Hubert Burgette C33,3 made his letter this year. Though an un- derclassman Hub shows ability and with more drive can make a tough boy e in there at center. This concludes our little session with you about the boys and their assets to the ball team. We could tell a few things about them that they wouldn't want to hear, but since they have been good sports throughout the year, we will be good sports too and forget these few incidents, which would make some of the players blush. This was the beginning of a wave of victories which lasted until the last game of the tournament, when New Haven lost to Elmhurst. The final score of the tournament was Elmhurst 2 and New Haven U. This defeat took the championship away from New Haven for the first time in three years. This is the finest record held by any school in the county and the Student Body should be proud of the team. ln the championship game, the Elmhurst Troians soon led the way to victory because the Bulldogs were unable to hit. After seven innings of play, the Trojans still nosed out the Bulldogs, won the pennant, and took the trophy back to Elmhurst. The players who receive letters this year are: Kenneth Klenke, Kenneth Hanefeld, Melvin Hernsoth, Clinton Mehring, Charles Hively, Baymond Wiese, Richard Lantz, Francis Bandelier, Bill Bolyard, Arthur Hemsoth, Dale Ehle, Fritz Poepple, Herbert Burgett, and Bo- land Bechtol. The great majority of us seniors have ended our formal education, but we as Americans nev- er stop liberal education. We must continue to learn so that we may teach our posterity to appreciate freedom of speech, religion, assembly, press, and petition that have been be- stowed upon us by our forefathers in the Bill of Bights of our Constitution. We, the people who will be the citizens of the future, acknowledge our responsibility to the republic. Our forefathers, having recognized this duty in the past, built schools which train us to carry out our duties with more grace and efficiency. We have now completed four years of in- tensive study which has been part of our desire to build a more democratic government. Today, as we live in a world of turmoil, confusion, and unrest, we feel that we must preserve our ideals of society-human brotherhood, and the golden rule. To bring the world back to peace and harmony in the future, we must go beyond partisanship and even the form of government itself to the real realities of human existence. We, as humans, must subject ourselves to the laws of nature if we, as a race, are to survive. The Gold Bush of '49-, the discovery of oil in the west, and the acquisition of Alaska with her vast stores of natural resources, have been great events, but they have not elim- inated our frontiers. The coming of the era of commercialized industry has not destroyed youth's opportunities. lt has shifted youth's frontiers to one of creative skills and scientific achievement. To those who have the ambition and initiative to go out and conquer, Amer- ica holds all that humans could possibly hope to attain. W'hen, in the course of years, we go about our routine duties of life, we can look back upon those years of preparation as something valuable to Youth, the Future Citizen. The sponsors for the class were Miss Harriet Lake and Miss Helen Harrell. The officers elected for the year were: David Van Meter, President: Herbert Bechtol, Vice-President: Homer Har- per, Secretary: Mildred Vonderau, Treasurer. Our first project was the sale of season bas- ketball tickets and for selling the largest number we were awarded five dollars. Another five dollars was added to the treasury by selling the most tickets to the Indoor Circus, spon- sored by the band. In the fall of l938 ninety-one Sophomores returned. The class elected Clinton Meh- ring, President, Herbert Bechtel, Vice-President: Mabel Stoner, Secretary: Melvin Hemsoth, Treasurer. Miss Harrell and Miss Lake were again the sponsors until Miss Harrell resigned to accept another position, her place being taken by Mrs. Reeves. Selling Christmas cards and pencils, sponsoring a skating party and movies completed the year's activities. On February I4 the girls entertained the boys with a pot-luck supper. In September 1939 Miss Creal and Mr. Marshall were named as sponsors. Officers for the year were: Clinton Mehring, President: Horner Harper, Vice-President: Delores Zelt, Secretary: David Van Meter, Treasurer. This was the class's outstanding year. With the help of the sponsors the juniors sold candy every noon at every basketball game during the year. This along with the money made by giving the junior play netted a substantial profit for the proposed trip for the senior year. The junior play, His Ozark Cousin, was presented April I9 by the following: Ray- mond Wiese, Herbert Bechtel, Homer Harper, Charles Forsyth, Mary Glass, Mildred Von- derau, Argyl Bacon, Eileen Potts, Nila Shierling, Marjorie Hemsoth, Dorothy Hazelett, and David Van Meter. The junior-senior banquet was held at the Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne on May 3, l940 and was followed by a theatre party. The Class of l94l decorated the gymnasium arid ushered at the baccalaureate and commencement exercises for the class of 1940. Seventy-three eager, enthusiastic faces appeared in room 2 and I3 with Mr. Mar- shall and Miss Creal again acting as sponsors, in the fall of I9-40. The class elected Clin- ton Mehring, Presidenty Homer Harper, Vice-Presidenty Ilene Burkett, Secretary: Robert Straub, Treasurer. In September the class sponsored a skating party. On February 20 the class pre- sented their annual play, All American Family. The cast included Mary Glass, Nila Shier- ling, Dorothy Hazelett, Eileen Potts, Evelyn Andres', Paul Freuchtenicht, Charles Forsythe, Walter Reinking, Herbert Bechtol, Argyl Bacon, and Mildred Vonderau. It was definitely decided that the class would go to Washington, D. C. One eve- ning was set aside for a discussion of our trip when Mr. Miller, who will conduct the tour, explained the proposed tour to the class and their parents. The Class of 41 deserves honorable mention for high scholastic achievements as well as ability to make money. It was the only class ever to win the award for the sale .of season basketball tickets for four consecutive years. The year's activities were completed by Class Day Exercises, May l6y Baccalaureate, May 18: Commencement, May 23: and the trip to Washington, May 24-31. Ilene Burkett, Secretary, Class of '4l.
