Holyoke College in 1906. She later did graduate work both at Middlebury College and at Yale. Her first teaching assignment was in Terryville, Connecticut, where she taught from 1906 until 1908, returning to New Haven in the fall of 1908. For the next thirty-eight years Miss Smith was a member of the English department in our school, doing splendid service until her retirement last vear. Earnest, conscientious, unseltish, and loyal, Miss Smith was a great influence for good at Hillhouse during the years of her stewardship. She was a strong disciplinarian and a most inspiring teacher, and she was never too busy to serve in an advisory capacity in many extracurricular activities. Reared and trained as a New Englander, she was always very earliest and sincere in her classroom work. To know her was to respect and to admire her. Her countless friends wish her the highest measure of health and happiness as she embarks upon her voyage of leisure. Fmsk 0. SHNNEY Frank O. Spinney, formerly instructor of United States History, Ancient and Medieval History, Civics, Biology, and Latin, came to New Haven High School in the fall of 1931, following a year of teaching in a private school in New York City. He attended the public schools in Upper Montclair, New jersey, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, and was graduated from Yale University in 1930. XVhile a Hillhouse faculty member he also taught at Arnold College and did graduate work at Yale in the classics and history, earning his Master's Degree in 1937. Mr. Spinney is the author of The Amherst Diary of VVilliam Otis Carr, 1853-18571 published in 1940, and several articles on early American craftsmen and artists. His work has been published in such magazines as The California Historical Society Quarterly, The New England Quarter- ly, Old-Time New England, The Magazine Antiques, The Connecticut Circle, and The American Home. He served 26 months in the Army fField Artilleryj returning to New Haven High School upon his discharge. In February, 1947, he resigned from the school system to become Director of the Manchester, New Hampshire, Historic Association, an institution maintain- ing a museum and library devoted to col- lecting, preserving, and publishing the history of that city and region. Mr. Spinney plans to live on his farm in Lee, New Hampshire, for the greater part of the year while associ- ated with the Historic Association. The faculty and students of Hillhouse join in wishing him success and happiness in his new venture. 27

Q7 A lx X Memoriam Isabel Stewart Mitchell was for many years a member of the History Department in the New Haven High School. Her background and training were that of a scholar. Miss Mitchelfs father was a Presbyterian minister in western New York, and her mother was a distinguished gentlewoman. Miss Mitchell's early classical training was given by her father. Her later education was received at the University of Rochester, Maryville College, and Yale University, where she proved herself capable both as a student and research worker. When the Connecti- cut Tercentenary Commission was searching for historians to write pamphlets for its celebration, Miss Mitchell was chosen to prepare one on The Roads of Colonial Connecticutf, Miss Mitchell's personality was one which had many facets. She was a person of intense enthusiasms and great personal charm. Her keen sense of humor made her 11-, delightful companion among both students and faculty. Her penetrating mind made history a living subject in the minds of her pupils. The school feels deeply the loss of an outstanding member of its faculty. 1 E ' . , .... ,Wi -C -.A..s-.-.,.r......-,..a.i.-.i....,....-.,.--.-,..,...,..-Q-...f 'NXf X 1 26
