I am eager to see you carry on the Hne traditions of Hillhouse as you grow into splendid manhood and womanhood, but I regret that it means infrequent contacts with many whom I have come to know intimately. Some of you will stay right here in New Haven all your lives, While others will move on to new fields to conquer. Wherever you go and whatever you do, I wish for you success and continued happiness. This year has been one of transition from a period of stress and strain to a happier atmosphere. The largest crowds in the history of the school witnessed your football and basketball games, and your school dances and senior prome- nade reached new heights of splendor. Many of your athletes doned new uniforms as the old ones, so full of patches as to be hardly recognizable, were finally laid to rest in honored glory. Even the blackboards and chalk boxes no longer bore the sombre war and post-war reminder that Kilroy was herev, and a lighter and more frivolous Open the door, Richardn made its appearance. It should be a source of gratification to you that your senior year was full of fun, devoid of depression. But with graduation begins a struggle, the struggle which will develop the characteristics you have lately acquired, and bring about your maturity as true Hillhouse graduates. You can be proud of your identity with a school which has trained many successful people, and which is endowed with the capacity to engender something deeper than knowledge. See to it that your story unfolds to reveal a picture as glorious as that past which has given to the name Hillhouse its true significance. DAVID H. CosTELLo, Hillhouse '28 Administrative A.s-.sistant 21

Portraits of teachers and classmates, class histories, news of clubs and societies, items concerning athletic teams, literary awards are all included here. Because the Class of 1947 has so many distinguished members, including World War II veterans who will soon receive their diplomas, I feel pleased and honored that I may proffer a message this year. As Administrative Assistant in the P.M. school, I have met and known many of you, others I know merely by sight . As I have worked with the Senior Class this year preparing this book, many of these acquaintances have become real friends whose loyalty will stand the test of time. My message is directed to one of our finest groups - the Class of 1947. It is this. From the moment you receive your diploma on one of the most memorable june evenings of your life, you will hear from the so-called older generation words such as these: i'Oh, if I could be graduating from high school! These are the happiest days of your life-I hope you make the most of themlv Class of 1947, those words are a delusion and a snare. Your Commencement Night will be the happiest evening of your life up to-and including that moment, but your happiest days are yet to come. Next year and the year following and the years after that-they will all bring you real and additional happiness as you grow older. Who knows which is the happiest year of his lifen? I am inclined to think it is the one a person is living at the moment. To all of you 1 offer my sincere wishes that you may enjoy to the utmost the happiest years of your life, whether it be your twenty-first, thirty-fifth, forty- ninth or seventiethg and 1 hope you will now and then tum the pages of this book, perhaps sharing with others the magic of its pages. Cordially yours, PHILIP A. HARRIMAN, Administrative Assistant 20 X 1, f

ez h 5154 fir 'O' v - ' .- 'S. fx 'N I xjs' iz X B .... ,,.. y l Greetings and Salulntions to ilu' Class of 1947: We have all met tests and challenges these past years. The years following wars are always hard. Tolerance and faith were never more needed than now. As Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler has said, If We can substitute for the spirit of gain, the spirit of human service, and put our life on a high moral plane, then we can eliminate Warf' Believe in yourself and others, be useful in your own way in every capacity and every walk of life, and victory as a true American will be yours. Do your duty as Well as you can, and begin by 11ot hurting others in the effort to please and help yourself. In our democratic system a man is classiHed not by his birth, but by what he has made of himself. Each one of you has a place waiting for you in this World, it is up to you to find it. VV'hen making your decision, consider this counsel, Think seldom of your enemies, often of your friends, and every day of Cod. My best wishes and good luck to each and everyone of you are my parting words to the class of 1947. M ay your future years be bright and happy, and may you live in a generation which will help bring to the world an everlasting Peace on Earth, Good Will to All Men. My faith is in you. BARBARA A. L.
