Tl, , X-1 ,ox B91 W - f W 1 ,Q-,Q To the Class of 1947: Well, this is the end of a perfect day, Near the end of a journey, too: But it leaves a thought that is big and strong, With a wish that is kind and true. For memory has painted this perfect day In colors that never fade, And we find at the end of a perfect day The soul of a friend we,ve madef, These words, found in Carrie Jacobs Bondls very well-known and popular, nostalgic ballad, seem most appropriate to me at this time, as I contemplate the passing from the halls of Hillhouse of one more senior class. You girls and boys have reached the end of a perfect dayvg you have many a vivid and happy Jmemoryvg and you have made', the souls of many friends. It is a somewhat sad and yet a happy, inspiring thought to carry away with you. We are all proud of the record you have established in your years of secondary school life. You have worked hard and well, and you have enjoyed many happy days, too, which you will long remember. Your athletes have brought much glory and prestige to your school and have displayed a type of sportsmanship, cooperation, and loyalty which will make them better men, as they go out into the world. During these years in your Alma Mater you have gained, I believe, not alone knowledge but also a spirit of tolerance and loyalty and a vision which should help you in future years. I have deeply enjoyed the friendship of many of you and now extend my heartiest congratulations to you all as you are about to depart. to emblazon your names successfully and proudly upon the scroll which is called -Tomorrow. Cordiallv yours, FRANK H. NETFLETON, '04 Administrative Assistant 19 9 -Y

'YZ X? :IQ If W i f wil l ,,,, s,-,-,-e.,,,,,,, c XX 1 To the Class of 1947: As another commencement season approaches and the members of another graduating class prepare to leave our school, I presume with the usual mixed emotions of joy and sorrow, it is my sincere Wish that the friendships you have formed, the habits you have developed, and the lessons you have learned will help to make your lives a bit more pleasant, a bit more useful than they might otherwise have been. You began your high school career during one of the darkest periods in the worldis history, and you have lived to see the cause of right and decency prevail. Though learned at an appalling cost in human lives and material, the importance of developing the moral courage to carry on, during those moments of despair, which all must sooner or later experience, is a lesson which forever should remain with us. With most of the peoples of the earth looking longingly in the direction of the United States for a solution to their problems, the need for the development of outstanding leaders and an intelligent, unselfish citizenry becomes immediately apparent. Never before have we been called upon to assume such an important role in World affairs. I am certain that during the past three years at New Haven High School you have made a splendid start toward the development of the necessary qualities to meet successfully this great challenge. Cordially yours, ENILIONS I. BOWEN, Assistant Principal N. H. H. S., 1915 18 I

Portraits of teachers and classmates, class histories, news of clubs and societies, items concerning athletic teams, literary awards are all included here. Because the Class of 1947 has so many distinguished members, including World War II veterans who will soon receive their diplomas, I feel pleased and honored that I may proffer a message this year. As Administrative Assistant in the P.M. school, I have met and known many of you, others I know merely by sight . As I have worked with the Senior Class this year preparing this book, many of these acquaintances have become real friends whose loyalty will stand the test of time. My message is directed to one of our finest groups - the Class of 1947. It is this. From the moment you receive your diploma on one of the most memorable june evenings of your life, you will hear from the so-called older generation words such as these: i'Oh, if I could be graduating from high school! These are the happiest days of your life-I hope you make the most of themlv Class of 1947, those words are a delusion and a snare. Your Commencement Night will be the happiest evening of your life up to-and including that moment, but your happiest days are yet to come. Next year and the year following and the years after that-they will all bring you real and additional happiness as you grow older. Who knows which is the happiest year of his lifen? I am inclined to think it is the one a person is living at the moment. To all of you 1 offer my sincere wishes that you may enjoy to the utmost the happiest years of your life, whether it be your twenty-first, thirty-fifth, forty- ninth or seventiethg and 1 hope you will now and then tum the pages of this book, perhaps sharing with others the magic of its pages. Cordially yours, PHILIP A. HARRIMAN, Administrative Assistant 20 X 1, f
