Foreword It is with pride and appreciation that we present the 1947 Elm Tree showing Hillhouse having fun at work and at play as its theme. We have tried to capture the spirit of Hillhouse in sports, in activities, in scholastic achievements, as her students continued to preserve the high ideals and traditions established by the earlier graduates of Hillhouse. For the last three years our cover has depicted some of the historical land- marks of New Haven. The 1947 Elm Tree has on its cover the Lighthouse which was built in 1840 at the eastern entrance to the harbor. For 37 years this Lighthouse was a guide to New Haven seamen and for ships which entered New Haven harbor from all parts of the world. In 1877 it was discontinued when a beacon was placed on the newly-built breakwater. The property was bought by the city of New Haven in 1924 and since that time has become known as a resort and amusement park for young and old alike. The efforts of this year,s staff members would have been useless Without the invaluable assistance of Philip A. Harriman, faculty adviser and general supervisor. We wish to thank Frederick T. Fay, who supervised the art work, and Ernest Stone, who helped in judging this work, Dr. Marion C. Sheridan, who aided in selecting additional staff members and in the literary work, and Amy L. Weeks, who supervised and proofread all written work in this volume. We are grateful to Alice-Esther Garvin and Stephen WVilton for permission to use the H illhouse Hymn, and to james Morcaldi for H illhouse Alma Mater, to Harlow E. Turck and the junior Elm Tree Board to whom we extend best wishes for the futureg to student photographers Dick Ehrenberg, Stuart Langer, and Arnold Smith for the candid shots used throughout the book, and to the Sentinel for their co-operation and publicity. In conclusion, it is our sincere hope that this Elm Tree will help to keep alive happy memories of years at Hillhouse and will prove to its owner to be a valuable and cherished possession.
