New Haven High School In days prior to 1852 the public educational system of New Haven had developed hardly beyond the eighth grade, but in an ever-prospering city, the necessity for a high school was soon realized. One room in VVebster School was utilized in 1852 for those students seeking a higher education. After a similar plan, which was also put into practice at Eaton School, met with success, the two groups were shifted in 1859 to the Young Menis Institute building on State Street to accommodate the increased enrollment. The year 1868 found the Lancas- trian School building, on the corner of Orange and Wall Streets, the new institu- tion of knowledge. Between the years 1872 and 1898, a newly constructed Hillhouse building on this site was employed, while in 1897 because of the un- usually high attendance, about one hundred freshmen were transferred to Boardman Manual Training School, which was erected in 1894. Ever-increasing enrollment presented a critical problem of congestion, hence the erection of our present Tower Parkway building was completed in 1903. Common aims of Boardman and Hillhouse led to the consolidation of both schools into one institution under the official title of New Haven High School. An additional afternoon session in 1909, a permanent trade school in part of the Boardman building, and the construction of the annex in 1914 were the later developments. By the establishing of Commercial, in 1920, I-Iillhouse was some- what relieved of its burdensome congestion. Today, as in previous years, Hillhouse stands as a resplendent light to those students venturing forth into a dark World of chaos and conflicting ideas. 6 .

Foreword Since early October the staff members of the Elm Tree have been working to produce the annual issue of the senior year book. We have been trying to create an Elm Tree that will measure up to the high standard set by previous issues, and it is our sincere hope that We have succeeded. The purpose of the 1944 Elm Tree is to show New Haven High School as a builder of Connecticut manhood. Constantly since 1872, when the original Hillhouse building was constructed at the corner of Orange and Wall Streets, our school has been a stepping stone from youth to manhood. Many boys and girls receiving their diplomas on graduation from New Haven High School step out into the World to face life for the first time. In the third year of YVorld VVar H a great majority of our classmates will go to serve our country in the armed forces or as nurses and defense Workers on the home front. During 1943-1944 we have seen many of our classmates and another mem- ber of the faculty leave for service in the various branches. Following last yearis example we have set aside a special to the colorsv section in honor of the boys who left before graduation. Pictures of some of these boys, in their uniforms, have also been printed in this section. This year We have added to the contents of the book a special page in honor of those members of the faculty retiring at the end of this year, and also a special page describing the Placement Service set up in Room 20 and conducted by Miss Marguerite Healy. This service has proved very beneficial to many students. The boards of the Elm Tree are grateful to the faculty and student body for their co-operation, and we wish to extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Philip A. Harriman, business and editorial adviserg Mr. Frederick T. Fay, art adviser, and Dr. Marion C. Sheridan and Miss Amy L. Weeks, literary advisers, for their priceless help and tireless efforts in making this book a success. We would like to thank John Simpson, Fred Goldner, Kenneth Coleman, and Anita Doff for their contributions of candid photographs which may be found in each section of the book. Finally it is our hope that this book may provide great enjoyment and prove a prized possession ot its owner. THOLIAS DoLAN
