New Haven High School In days prior to 1852 the public educational system of New Haven had developed hardly beyond the eighth grade, but in an ever-prospering city, the necessity for a high school was soon realized. One room in VVebster School was utilized in 1852 for those students seeking a higher education. After a similar plan, which was also put into practice at Eaton School, met with success, the two groups were shifted in 1859 to the Young Menis Institute building on State Street to accommodate the increased enrollment. The year 1868 found the Lancas- trian School building, on the corner of Orange and Wall Streets, the new institu- tion of knowledge. Between the years 1872 and 1898, a newly constructed Hillhouse building on this site was employed, while in 1897 because of the un- usually high attendance, about one hundred freshmen were transferred to Boardman Manual Training School, which was erected in 1894. Ever-increasing enrollment presented a critical problem of congestion, hence the erection of our present Tower Parkway building was completed in 1903. Common aims of Boardman and Hillhouse led to the consolidation of both schools into one institution under the official title of New Haven High School. An additional afternoon session in 1909, a permanent trade school in part of the Boardman building, and the construction of the annex in 1914 were the later developments. By the establishing of Commercial, in 1920, I-Iillhouse was some- what relieved of its burdensome congestion. Today, as in previous years, Hillhouse stands as a resplendent light to those students venturing forth into a dark World of chaos and conflicting ideas. 6 .
