ilinrnunrh To record in this class book all the noteworthy events of our high school days has been our pleasant task during this year. l'Ve have endeavored to include all that will bring hack rememberances of the happiness derived from our work, the fun and friendship we have shared in our time here together. If, in years to come, these pic- tures and accounts convey only a part of the spirit that has domi- nated our life in Hillhouse, we shall feel we have succeeded. For the time and aid they have so generously given, we wish to make our acknowleclgments to Miss Sheridan of the English De- partment, Miss Bowdy of the Art Department, Miss Hammond, Mr. Kirschner, Mr. VVentworth, and to all other members of the faculty who cooperated in helping us prepare this sixth animal edi- tion of the Elm Tree . The Editors.

I have just read the statement of a prominent college president that a boy of proper intellectual capacity. ambition, and reasonable linancial means, needed only self-control and self-reliance to make a success in college. I should add one more thing, that is, self-denial, and then the boy is equipped for college or any other job in life. VVhat the country needs now is an electorate of young men and women, strong in those three characteristics. If your life in New Haven High has contributed to your character strength in these points, you are going to be the kind of men and women that will save democ- racy and you are pretty sure to be called upon to prove it. You have lived through four very trying years. You have met the disconcerting e1Tect of these troublous times upon your schooling with a smile. Beneath the smile may there be earnest- ness and determination and confidence, so that you carry the tradition of Hillhouse with you into your life's work. RALPH WVENTWORTH. 8
