X x 0 5555 QF N LZ' In the history of the world many nations have risen through countless struggles to greatness and fame. So long as their citizens were people of sturdy upright char- acter, greatness and power endured. But when the character of the people became soft and degenerate, all nations have declined in power and fallen into decay. Education builds character. This character building is the most important reason for the existence of schools. Every year New Haven High School sends out into the community strong, sturdy citizens of high ideals who are well trained to enter into the life of this city and of our nation. It is my Firm and confident belief that the members of the Class of 1931 have grown greatly during the past four years in character and ideals. lt is my hope that you will realize your ideals. VVith best wishes for a happy and prosperous future, I am Cordially yours, IRVING N. COUNTRYMAN. N. H. H. S. 1901. 14 .44

E J!!! J . QM To the Class of 1931: After four years of such close association as we have enjoyed together in this school, it is hard to realize that you are so soon to leave us and take up the serious responsible work which lies just ahead of you. With this thought in all our minds at this season of the school year, we pause to give expression to our feelings and I want you to know that my kinclest hopes and wishes go with youg that you may find happiness and cheer in life 3 that you may he diligent in your efforts, faithful in your duties, honest and true in all service which you are privileged to renderg and that you may always bear in mind the loyal interest which your Alma Mater has had and always will have in you. Cordially yours, JANET M. PURDUE. 13

l l mgeudw Your four years of learning in New Haven High are at an end. VVhat seemed a long time at its beginning now at its conclusion seems a short one. And yet in a sense your high school learning is not over, nor ever will be. In part it has crys- talized into habits which will relieve the mind from giving too much conscious atten- tion to actions along their particular lines.. In part it has prepared the soil, enriched the mind, made it more fertile to receive with understanding the impressions which will come from college life and studies, or from a business career in its set-up and insistent requirement for action. W'e hope that the habits will turn out to have been the ones to make you stronger for your daily living and that your ability to image ideals, see facts. and make creditable decisions will prove that in mind and spirit you have been preparing for the future education which you are bound, in one way or another, to continue to acquire. I VV e trust you have had happy years in your High School and hope you have happier ones yet in store. RALPH VVEN'rwoRTH. 15 g.
