NEW H.xvEN Hion SCHOOL CL.xss BOOK 13 Plasterf' which was very successfully given. And the dance after- ward was superb. During the spring the girls were invited to two teas, one given by the Alpha Alpha Sorority, and the other by the girls of Kappa Mu Sigma. The teas are certainly very popular with the girls and are well-attended. A Charity Concert given by the Senior Class was next in order. A programme of fourteen numbers was given by the class assisted by Odenkirsche-n's Urchestra. Solos. duets, quartets and choruses were beautifully rendered and the round sum of one hundred and fifty dollars was realized. Another example for us to follow, classmates! 'The following day the baseball season opened and defeat was ours in the game with the Yale Freshmen. But a week's training improved the nine and the Naugatuck High School team was no match for ours. By a score of 7 to 3 we won, and considered we had wiped out the defeat of the previous week. Cnr next victim was New Britain High. And so throughout the season, -we played and received victories and defeats in prfetty equal numbers. And now it was drawing near election time. Dr. Cushing called a meeting of the junior class. before which he read the Constitution of the Class of 1908. A committee was appointed to revise it to suit the needs of the class, and the next week we were summoned 'to consider its adoption and to elect our officers. Hillhouse and Boardman called mass meetings previous to the election and we assembled that Friday noon keyed to the highest pitch of excitement. XVould Boardman win or would Hillhouse? No one knew.-we could only conjecture. And when at last the votes had all been cast and counted and the result announced, we cheered President Dustin with a will and were glad it was all over. Boardman had won the election and the laurels were for a man worthy of them. Hillhouse had lcstg and those who knew him realized that loss had fallen upon a man who knew far better than most of us how to take it and come up smiling,-thus turning defeat into as glorious a thing as victory. The vice-presi- dent, according to the Constitution, should be a Hillhouse man, so Mr. Comstock was unanimously elected to that office. Miss

V 12 NEW HAVEN PITCH SCHOOL CL.xss BOOK At this booth, which was in the lunch-room in the basement, the girls made tea. The candy booth, bedecked with roses, was in this room also. The ta-bles with huge paper daisies as covers, were very pretty, especially when the candelabra were lighted. Ice cream, cake, lemonade, and tea were served by girls in daisy cos- tumes. Another attraction was the side-show, a series of wax- works. The Fair certainly was a great success financially and socially and too much credit cannot be given Miss Blakeslee for her able work as chairman of the committee. Then we were ready for the basket-ball season. Although the games were not exceptionally well-attended, the team did some splendid work and played through a very successful season. Twenty-five games were arranged, fifteen of which were home gan1es,uancLthe victories and defeats were pretty evenly balanced. Captain Dustin was the star player and was well-supported by Saxe, Frankel, Connolly and Starkweather. - The hockey team played a few games when the weather per- mitted, but that was not often enough to make up a regular sched- ule. On january ninth, such of us as were able and felt so inclined, went to wa-tch the seniors play Davy Crockett. And they cer- tainly played nobly! Not one in the cast did poor work, and many did exceptionally fine work, so we were not surprised to hear later that the class had voted them a banquet as a reward for their labors. lVe decided, however, to equal, if not excel, them in our production when we got to be serious and dignified seniors. The thirty-first of January seemed to be a very popular night, and is certainly a memorable one for many of us, for two dances were given, one by Theta Rho, the other by Theta Signaa. Both were enjoyed by all who attended and many who didn't, wished they could. The Alpha Delta Sigma Fraternity enlivened things February fourteenth with their annual entertainment and dance. Agair: I-jog scored, for one of the members of the cast, Jerome Gilbert, '09, was the hit of the evening in the farce entitled 'iThe Music

. , , 14 NEW HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL CLAss BOOK Langley of Hillhouse was elected secretaryg and Mr. Fifield of Boardman, treasurer, with Miss Schneider of Hillhouse and Miss Sarles of Boardman as his assistants. Mr. Cross was elected ser- geant-at-arms. And then we were really organized as a class. Friday night, April twenty-fourth, Zeta Chapter of Alpha Iota Epsilon Fraternity gave a dance in XVarner Hall. The dance was well-attended and the dancers spent a very enjoyable even- ing and one which they will remember with pleasure. The junior Reading Circle, which had been formed earlier in the year by Miss Cleaveland, held -their closing entertainment in the Library, Friday, May Ist. The circle was composed of mem- bers of the junior Class of Hillhouse, and more than twenty of the girls had joined. ,7Duri,ng theqyear,-,meetings had been held every two weeks and selections had been read from various Amer- ican poets. The entertainment was in keeping wi-th the work done by the circle, being a representation of The Courtship of Miles Standish. Miss Blake, secretary of the circle. read several se- lections from the poem between the scenes. Miss Petrie as Pris- cilla, Miss Barnes as john Alden, and Miss Quinlan as Miles Standish headed a cast of very clever actresses. Many of the Sophomores were present, and both Sophomores and Juniors en- joyed the little play immensely. Late in April, the Seniors gave their promenade and dance in Music Hall. This was the first time that the Seniors had at- tempted a promenade and it was such a success that probably it will become an animal event. The last big social event of the year was the Cresent Enter- tainment and Dance given in Music Hall, Friday, May Sth. The farce entitled The Peacemakeru was very successfully played and the dance was a long-to-be-remembered one. And now the end of the year was approaching. The Seniors were preparing for graduation, and we juniors felt very unim- portant when we thought of the year that still remained before we could represent the graduating class of New Haven High School. And in that year we had a great deal to do. junior year ,at its best was only a preparation for the leadership of the school. As we looked back over the past ten months, we felt that we had
