'Nl ,B M I Q93 52, C St HE fourth mile post in the High School race looms in sight and will soon he passed. XfVhat then? VVill the racers stop, content to rest on laurels already won, or will they push on toward higher goals? Surely we cannot stop if we hearken to the voice of nature telling the story with a million tongues that life is progressive- life is evolutionary, ever onward and upward until, in some sphere of existence, mental and physical perfection is attained and the purpose of God revealed. lf We are to be in harmony with this grand scheme of the Creator, to stop the race at the senior mile post is out of question. VVC Hz-zzsf push on. Vife must follow the advice of the thoughtful Emerson and hitch our wagons to a star. Our ideals must be high and ever beyond our reach. To over- take our ideal is to arrest progress. As we approach our ideal, then, let us raise our standard of excellence and continue onward and upward, ever reaching for that higher ideal that can only be content when perfection is attained.

SENIOR Crass. I7 The 1905 senior class of New Haven High School has had experiences not unlike those that used to come to former classes and will come to future classes until time shall be no more. joys and sorrows, triumphs and disappointments-all these emotions have we individually experienced, and yet what a blessed dispen- sation it has been that the sorrows and disappointments bear so little proportion to the joys and triumphs of our Senior year. The consolidation of Hillhouse and Boardman, that at first sug- gested the incompatibility of a mismated husband and wife, may now be said to fully justify the wisdom of its. promoters. The lion and the lamb now lie down together and the common interests of these two departments of one magnificent whole flow on with the faultless rhythm of a grand sweet songs 'fln union there is strength? ln the consolidation of these two schools there was both wisdom and strength. The result already has been a higher standard of excellence in Scholarship and Athletics. An event worthy of notice, perhaps, was the adoption by our class of the design of the class pin of IQO4. This design has been copyrighted and all succeeding classes will use the same general design, merely changing the numerals from year to year. The Jepson celebration was one of the notable occurrences of our senior year. To be forty years an instructor is a record so unusual as toxattract wide attention. A feature of this function, proudly appreciated and long to be remembered, was the reading of an original poem by our advanced English instructor, Miss Sheridan, whose claim upon our gratitude and affections is unmeasured. The revival of interest in the Debating societies and the study of elocution have been outcroppings of the senior year. On April twenty-eighth, there occurred in the School Audito- rium a prize speaking contest made possible by the Alumni Associ- ation. Generous prizes were offered and six eager contestants struggled for the same. l Q ln the limited space prescribed in this book for recording the senior year of the class of I9o5, I have found it necessary to gen- eralize most broadly. Many subjects and incidents worthy of mention, that have made up the warp and woof of our Senior year.
