Our band at Duke Stadium students are recognized at tapping ceremonies held in assembly. A member of this organization must stand in the upper third of his class. To be elected into the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y is another honor to be desired by a student. There is a limited membership and all members have to be elected. Each year the Hi-Y presents a minstrel for which it is famous. If you arenit afraid to stand before hundreds of people, then youlll be interested in the oratorical declamation contest, sponsored by the Lions, Club, which is an annual event looked forward to by many. The contest is divided into four groups: The freshmen and sophomore boys, and junior and senior girls. The speeches are also divided into humorous and serious. Awards are given to the four winners. Those who enter must have won out in the preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals. Another distinguished and useful department is the nursery school. During the war, the nursery school was supported by the government, but now it is supported by the State. Children from two to five are allowed to come. Games, working with the hands, and proper manners are taught. The chil- dren are fed two and sometimes three meals per day. They also take naps in the morning and after- noon. The children are also taught to play together in harmony. A great deal of equipment including see-saws, swings, a sliding board, and many other large recreational utensils has been acquired. In the spring, we have another long looked-for event. This is honor day. This is a day set aside on which the students receive recognition for perfect attendance, scholarship and honors bestowed upon them by school and civic organizations. Letters are presented to those boys and girls who have earned them in football, basketball, tennis, baseball, and rifling. The Foy Roe Trophy is presented to the most valuable football player, and the Johnny Schmidt Trophy and Placque to the most valuable baseball player. A new trophy, presented last year for the first time, is the Trask Trophy given to the football player with the highest scholastic record. The girl, elected by the sophomore class as being nearest like Martha Halligan, is presented the Martha Halligan Cup, which was first presented in 1943. The Helen Bridgers Cup is given by the girls' Hi-Y to the senior girl who most nearly lives up to the ideals exemplified by her life. The Joe Schrader Memorial Cup is presented to the most outstanding senior boy by the boys' Hi-Y. The Civitan Cup is given to the most outstanding senior. The Chemistry and Physics Awards are given to the students who are the most outstanding in these fields. Well, Class of '48, it looks like you had better get to work if you're going to live up to the good work of '47, but best of luck to you and may you always remember your senior year in high school as the best one. come down to inspect and test the corp and grade them. The R.O.T.C. presents many awards on honor day. - The largest school organization is the student government. Our school has a right to be proud of its student government because that organization makes and carries out all laws besides producing programs beneficial to the students. The government has as its heads the president and vice-president of the student body. The government is divided into three parts: The executive branch, the legis- lative branch, and the judicial branch. The president presides at the meetings of the executive council which is made up of the president, vice-president, clerk, chief marshal, director of social activities, director of finance, director of elections, director of club activities, and an adult adviser. The function of this group is to carry out the regulations made and the activities planned by the student legislature. The student legislature is presided over by the vice-president and is made up of the three officers of each of the four classes, a representative from every homeroom in school and three adult advisers. The function of the student legislature is to pass regulations for the good of the student body at large. Lastly the judicial branch is made up of the chief marshal, the five judges, the adult adviser and a number of judicial marshals. The student government sponsors many worthy projects such as the Thanksgiving offering, noted speakers in assembly programs, and many other activities. Delegates from the legislature attend the State Student Council Congress every year. This year the newly elected president was from our own school. We feel that our students need to get more exercise so physical education is taught to both l'0ys and girls. They have gym three times a week and health twice. The girls learn to dance, play softball, basketball, volley ball, and many other sports. The boys play similar sports with the addition of football and track. VVe have two gyms: one for the boys and one for the girls. The boys, gym is in the main building and the girls' in the Isaac Bear Annex. Our football and basketball teams are noted throughout the State for their excellence. Thousands of people attend our games, and we have good support from the adults of the city. We also have baseball, tennis, and track in the field of athletics. We have three full-time coaches: Leon Brogden, Iap Davis, and Tom Davis. Mr. Wallace West is the coach for thejunior varsity teams. The Tennis Club is in its twelfth year of existence this year, and was organized to promote this sport in the school. Each year a tennis team is chosen, and this team goes to out-of-town meets. Another athletic club is the Monogram Club. Membership in this club is quite an honor as only those boys who have earned a varsity letter are eligible. Connected with these clubs are the cheerleaders, who cheer our lads to victory or defeat. We have eight girls and four boys this year. On honor day all those cheer- leaders who are seniors receive miniature gold megaphones. To those who work hard some honor and credit must be shown. The highest honor a student may receive during his high school career is to be elected into the National Honor Society. The members are elected into the club in the fall and in the spring and consists of onlyjuniors and seniors.
