CLASS POEM As now we take our leave, O School, of thee, Nostalgic memories flash across our minds. Each Senior in his thought of thee still finds In backward glances many joys to see: Teachers—loved far more for what they seem to be Than for instruction of so many kinds, And friendship forged with powerful tie that binds Our hearts to them, dear School, and so to thee. ’Tis hard to say goodbye, but this we must, And turn our eyes toward what the future holds, Uncertain tho’ it be, we put our trust In Him whose loving care always enfolds Those who for guidance seek his wise and just And ever-loving care for those He molds. ATHLETICS 1944245 This year’s athletic achievements fell a little below | © aon average in all three major sports, as a result of inexperienced clubs and injuries. The Hanover Gridsters chalked up a none too impres- sive record this year, having been immensely handicapped by numerous injuries, and th e return of only two of last year’s starters. The Basketeers rocked up a fair record, despite the fact that they dribbled off to a bad start, all of last year’s starters having graduated. The lot of Horsehiders, boasting the return of only two of last year’s lettermen, had a better-than-average outfit, despite the “rookies” in the starting line-up. CLASS HISTORY It was in the eventful year of 1941 that we boarded the good ship of learning, N. H. H. S. If there was ever a seasick-green bunch of Freshmen, we were it. It took a pretty good while to “stow our gear”, learn that our vessel was only three decks high, and discover that there were no eggs in the crow’s nest. Well do we remember “Admiral” Hamilton’s first pep-talk. We needed it, too. We felt as insignificant as the barnacles on the keel; here we were embarking on the last phase of our cruise for knowledge in a totally unfamiliar ship. It was not long, though, before we got the hang of it and were sailing with the best of them. We held our first election and chose Gwynn Townes to be our helmsman. We sailed smoothly until December 7, 1941, when we were startled to find ourselves plunged into the dangerous seas of World War II. The going was now rough, but we stuck fast to our post. So it was in 1942 we advanced to the Sophomore Class. We were getting our sea legs now. We had dropped our Freshman slogan of “I don’t know” and adopted a more impressive one of “I forgot.” Again we held elections, and Eloise Jacobi became our navigator. Again things went along smoothly except that we lost our Thursday morning movie. In the fall of 1943 we once more climbed in prestige and found ourselves Juniors. Pretty soon some of the more ambitious ones began to hanker to enter via the Seniors’ sacred steps, and if higher authority had not stepped in, it would not have stopped short of mutiny. The craving stomachs of the starving students called for—and got—two lunch periods, though some of the sixth-perioders doubted their ability to last the extra hour. Another day at the polls brought out a capable feminine class president in the tall form of Elsie Corbett. Two deep mysteries presented themselves during this year. By some strange means our flag pole was reduced to a pitiful stump, and later on in the year the Senior steps acquired a liberal coat of green paint of doubtful beauty. How well do we remember the big snow this year with snowball fights, snowmen, and getting dismissed early. We gave our first class play and chose one that got in a good rib at the faculty. It was ‘““Who’s Crazy Now?”, and it placed our favorite teachers in the nuthouse. Irvin Bobbitt and Helen Hicks took the leading roles. We put our all into our Junior-Senior Prom, .too. Spring was our theme, and nothing was too good for our Seniors. This year we started what we hope will be an annual affair: an outdoor May Day festival. So ended a very happy year. At last we have inherited the highest rank of all! We are full-fledged Seniors! We think Freshmen just as dumb as the Seniors thought us to be when we were Freshmen. No one can be that dumb, however. Freshmen must know some- thing. Yet, many of us would not mind being Frosh again. Jimmy Burns is now captain of the ship, and the rest of us as Seniors are its ranking officers. We set the examples and walk around trying to look intelligent. We own the coveted steps and will go down fighting for their preservation. We wear gold rings set cruise. We are confident that we are leaving capable hands in charge, and to rings and. of our achievements, and we are prepared for the end of our long with black stones bearing the words “Class of 1945,” We are proud of our them we say “Bon Voyage.” ne LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT (TIS BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE) STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA, COUNTY OF NEW HANOVER. We, the infamous Seniors of ’45, realizing full well that our days as such are numbered, and being of reasonably sound mind and body, do hereby will and bequeath to our heirs such of our worldly possessions as we consider will be useful to them, said possessions to be distributed as stipulated below; and at the same time, we beseech our heirs to receive their inheritances in the same well- meaning manner in which they are given. FIRST: Any of our most choice possessions which, for reasons best known to ourselves, we will not be able to take with us; namely, the Senior Steps, etc., we leave to the Juniors, along with a shovel with which they are expected to dig their way through the soot which eternally finds refuge on the steps. SECOND: Our excellent record in football we leave to the Juniors, along with the fervent hope that they may win another game sometime. THIRD: We leave to the Sophomores all the fads we have enjoyed so much; society slinks, females dressed in dungarees, and other weird ideas. FOURTH: Our only remaining possessions are a tube of lipstick and a razor, which we leave to the Freshmen along with an encyclopedia which will give directions in full for use of said articles. FIFTH: As it is our solemn wish to see the class of °46 as well endowed with all the finer traits of personality and character as we are, we as individuals will the following useful gifts: I, Wilton Rankin, do will my winning ways and my skill at various card games to George Clark, realizing that he will be able to use them to advantage. I, Blanche Reynolds, leave my treasured shoes, one pair to Ann Adams, the other to Nell Trask, knowing that they will appreciate them immensely. We, Lily Groover and Helen Codington, do leave our ability to giggle as accredited to us by Mrs. LeGrand, to Corinne Wilkinson, Betty Hanson, and Shirley Brown. I, Janet Jones, do will that which is known as my technique to Katherine Kester. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT (Continued ) I, Charlie Mitchell, leave my renowned sneezes to Miss Barksdale, as I under- stand just how fond she is of them. I, Thelma Gunnerson, will my expressive facial contortions and my ever ready supply of pertinent remarks to anyone who finds himself at a loss for words. I, Emil Meyers, do present to Jack Marcus, my ability to make the female hearts flutter, realizing that he doesn’t need this badly. I, Elsie Corbett, will and bequeath the headache I acquired as business man- ager of the Hanoverian along with my glasses, which I never wear, to whoever gets this job next year. I, Willis Rogers, leave my inimitable personality and my uncalled for remarks to Julian Barbot. We, Alana, Muggie, and Cackie, do leave the section of the Senior Steps where we hold court to Finky Marlowe and Lillian Evans. I, Jimmy Wells, do leave the blue slips which were willed to me to Skinny Symmes. I, Max Godwin, do leave my serious and solemn manner to my brother, Jack, understanding his lack. I, Jimmy Burns, do will and bequeath my project of white lines down the halls to Raynor Newbold. I, Mavis Sykes, do leave my laryngitis to Mellie Barlow, knowing that it won’t be so much of an affliction to her. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the said Class of ’45 do hereunto set our hand and affix our seal. Signed: THELMA GUNNERSEN, LucILE CONLY. Signed, sealed, published, and declared by the said Class of 45 as, for, and to be their last will and testament in the presence of us, we hereunto subscribe our names as witnesses thereof.
