Seniors SSO $ fo % 2 4 ‘e x 5 ee SeoMeathe x KV) ) Class Poem A trifle weary, a little sad, Reminiscent — and yet quite glad, We reach the top, and poised and still, We stand here, breathless, memories fill Our throbbing hearts. We turn and gaze Quietly back across the days That, spun together, made those years Of hearty laughter; silent tears. Day by day weve built our dreams, Life’s foundation, crossed with beams Of knowledge and the love of truth— Into a temple, in which youth May live and grow. How carefully Our thoughts were guided, so that we might Learn more than what volumes give, They taught us truly how to live. JOE VENABLE You ask him for three hundred cards Poems, activities all typed in Instead of pretending you've lost your mind He still can give you one broad grin, DOROTHY ROMEO Three hundred pictures taken, proofs Returned and sorted for the finish We've not yet under all this pressure Known her enthusiasm to diminish. t MARGARET WENBERG She turns out jingles by the score Does all her own and asks for more Writes on prophecies, this and that Load her down you can’t knock her flat. And, the entire nation is agog at the n ews that Dr. Joe Glover, the greatest inventive genius of the century, has at last completed his amazing machine to turn time backward. The initial demonstration of the new invention will be given in Dr. Glover’s hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina with the class of ’44 of New Hanover High participating. Those alumni, of whom some are now famous national and international figures, have been gathering for days ahead of time, all eager to relive their carefree school days. Two of them, one, a renowned foreign correspondent, Claude Jordan; the other, a well-known Broadway actress, Kathleen Guthrie, are standing on the corner of 13th and Market Streets reminiscing before the eventful demonstration. “Remember what a fresh bunch of freshmen we were?” Jordan asked. “T certainly do. All of our teachers said we were the most irresponsible group they’d ever seen,” Kay answered quickly. “We went up the ‘down’ steps and don’t they all—we dropped in on senior classes when we went to 211 instead of 311, and we made ourselves generally obnoxious — to the upperclassmen anyway. And remember our first election?” “Yes. Let’s see, we elected Bill McIlwain to lead us that time, I believe. He made a good president, too. Really looked out for our interests.” They walked down 13th Street toward Princess. “Look, there’s the new gym,” Kay suddenly cried, “only I guess it isn’t so new now. Remember the uproar those workmen made dropping iron beams and bricks and anything else they could?” “I sure do, but the old place really is a credit to the school now. On the whole that first year was pretty eventful, but I guess more really happened during our sophomore year than any other time.” “Yes,” Kay agreed meditatively, “because that was the year the United States entered World War II. I don’t think Ill ever forget that December 8th when the whole school gathered to hear President Roosevelt’s speech asking Congress for a declaration of war. It must have been quite a sight to see grim, set faces of all those boys and girls as they listened to his long-remembered words.” “And just a few days later N. H. H. S. declared war on the Axis,” Jordan added, “but that’s not all that made it eventful, for it was during that year that we adopted our new constitution. Come to think of it, Gerald Baker was the last sophomore president elected under the old one. And then came June and we became full-fledged Juniors.” “Didn’t we have fun our Junior year? We went to assembly with the Seniors and really enjoyed it even though we did have to sit still while they went out.” THE CLASS HISTORY (Continued ) “And remember our first class play? It was called ‘What About Betty’, wasn’t it? Everybody expected it to be a colossal flop, but we really surprised them. It was one of the best plays in years. And then there was that wonderful Junior-Senior we gave for the graduating class.” “It was loads of fun,” she agreed. “I loved those cute little gifts they gave to some of the most outstanding seniors. We surprised everyone that year too by elect- ing a girl as our class president. But Byah Thomason was a pretty swell girl, wasn’t she?” “She really was. And she made a grand Student Body President the next year when B. D. Albright had to resign because Uncle Sam called him. “Our senior year was really the year of years. N. H. H. S. again expanded and took over Isaac Bear for commercial classes. And just think how proud we were to at last be able to use those front steps—the Senior Steps! And then there was our Senior play. We surely enjoyed that.” Jordan broke in. “That Junior class certainly outdid themselves when they gave us our Junior-Senior. Everyone had a marvelous time that night. And then came June and we graduated. Gosh, I hated to leave the old place.” “Me too. I wish we could do it all over again.” “Well, we can! Joe’s machine is going to make it possible.” “Then what are we waiting for?” And walking slowly, they joined the crowd moving toward the N. H. H. S. auditorium. Mary EMMA HUMPHREY. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT “What in the future can compare What dazzling moments seem so bright” As memory’s peek in romance rare Those shining school days lost to sight. STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA; COUNTY OF NEW HANOVER. We, the members of the famed class of °44, realizing that the remainder of our days in N. H. H. S. are few, and being of sound body and comparatively sound mind, do hereby bequeath to our proteges, the Juniors, our worldly possessions, our charming ways and our charming personalities interwoven with our many not so charming characteristics. As a class we wish to bequeath the following: First: Our love and enthusiasm for our school and our loyalty to its high standards. SECOND: Our excellent record in football for the 43 season. Tuirp: We do bequeath to you also our ways and means of cutting school with the hope you'll be more successful with them than we were. FourTH: As individuals the following of our class leave to you their special outstanding qualities: I, Byah Thomason, do will and bequeath my numerous abilities and leadership characteristics to Eloise Jacobi, who has proved herself worthy of them. I, Ned Herring, do will and bequeath my way with the women to “Killer” Hufham, realizing that he isn’t badly in need of it. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT (Continued) I, Betty Evans, do will and bequeath my never-fail flirting technique to Betty Sue Westbrook, who in turn, will make wise use of it.
