EICHORN, Custodian of the Building From the minute we became high school students to the last sad farewell to New Hanover High, we have been ever conscious of your presence. It was you who told us we would get out of high school just what we put into it. It was you who showed us how to begin—which foot to put forward. It was you who held us back when we began running too fast. Steel discipline flavored with love helped you to lead us aright. Many times you have borne the responsibility of foolish things to shield us. You have been our friend, our counselor, our leader. When we think of high school in the coming years, we will think of many things—good times, friends, good days, bad days, lessons—a jumble of memories. But always the one thing that will stand out sure and strong in our mind will be the thought of one who directed all of this activity, yet had time to understand each of us in our troubles or joys. We salute you, Mr. Hamilton, as the best gift New Han- over High could give to us. ARTHUR SHAIN EveE_LyN BrRowN AND BryAN MarRSHBURN Class Poem Oh School of ours, to you we pledge devotion. Oh noble School, we'll ever honor you. With tearful eyes, but heads erect we leave you, Dear N. H. S. youve taught us to be true. We leave your doors with higher living standards, And with a code that ever will endure, For like the clay you molded us and made us, Dear N. H. S. you’ve taught us to be pure. You gave us teachers who were kind and thoughtful, They've watched a million like us come and go. But one of them can only watch from Heaven, Her life is all the gift she need bestow. Within your walls we laughed and cried together, But loved them both, the laughter and the tears. What precious mem’ries have we now behind us, To last us ever onward through the years. H. H. S.’s Phantom Queens have a spotless record in more than five years of inter-scholastic competition. Under the guidance of Coach Glenward Blomme the Queens seldom lost even an individual match during their meets. With the abolition of inter-scholastic basketball competition for N. H. H. S. girls, tennis has become the only sport in which this high school’s girls can compete with lassies of other schools. Their new coach, Rupert Bryan, has had much difficulty in securing competition for the lassies, but was expected to turn out another fine team. The 1942 lineup: No. 1. Eslie Fergus. No. 4. Under ten years of Coach Glenward Blomme the Aces have consistently won the Eastern State Crown and the state title during many of these years. Coach Rupert Bryan took over the reins this year, and his biggest problem was securing opposi- tion for his racquet prodigies. Tennis has become one of the most popular “minor” sports at N. H. H. S. The boys are expected to make a good 1942 lineup: No. 1. Charles Boney. No. 5. Matt Bulluck. No. 2. Bert Myers. No. 6. George Saffo. No. 3. Charles Edwards. No. 7. Robert Simpson. No. 4. Paul Snell. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Under the coaching of Rupert Bryan, New Hanover High’s junior varsity basket- ball quint has lost but two inter-scholastic contests. The junior varsity was begun three years ago under Coach Nat Pepper. Continuing from that time, the ‘“‘jayvel”’ teams have made quite a remarkable record. How true these words are! At last we have to leave the place that has been a second home to us for the last four years. Many memories have been made—some sweet, some sad. Now it is necessary to part from friends we love so dearly. As each and every Senior bids New Hanover High School “good-bye”, there are tears in his eyes. We realize that regardless of how much we have learned during our four years in high school, the unattained is still before us. Always calling in her golden tones, ambition leads us on. We remember the joys of our past years. Our freshman year we entered Hanover High with a feeling of awe. For a few weeks we walked around in a daze. Rooms, rooms, everywhere and nowhere to go. Those who had spent their eighth grade in the high school buildinz had no difficulties going from class to class. Alas! they were of no help to us. Thus with Jim Lynch as our president we crept through the year 1938-1939. Under the able leadership of Sally Prevatt as our president, we spent our sophomore year at the task of mak- ing ourselves known around the school. We joined club after club. Of course we had become members of some clubs during our freshman year, but we were just beginning to want our fingers in every pie we could possibly stick them into. For the first time in our en‘ire history, we appeared in the HANOVERIAN as a group. The Friday afternoon dances were initiated into school life, and we were well represented by a large number of students. With Anne Manitsas as president we climbed one moze rung in the ladder of success. We were now full- fledged Juniors ! Our play ‘The Patsy” with Tessie Finch and J. A. West in the leading roles was a grand success. After some indecision we chose the ruby as our class stone. How proud we were to wear the blood red ruby, a symbol of courage! Heroically we struggled through half a year of Solid Geometry under the sweet- est teacher New Hanover High has ever known, ‘“‘Miss Hettie’”. Many of our Juniors had the great honor of becoming members of the National Honor Society. Still others of our group took part in the Glee Club operetta ‘Trial by Jury.” Our class also entertained the Seniors at an excellent prom, which was a riot of bright colors and gay laughter. Last but not least came our Senior year, and with it, many privileges. Heads held high, we proudly walked up the Senior steps. We were master of all we surveyed. We had elected Burt Nisbet as our president in our last year of glory and he proved to be an able leader. Of our class, twenty-eight had the distinction of be- coming members of the National Honor Society. Fifteen of these members had been elected into the society their Junior year. The candle light induction service was very beautiful and impressive. The old members of the Society came off the stage among the audience and escorted the new members back. What a thrill it was and what a feeling of pride and fear entered us when we took our vow to uphold the standards of the Society. The Senior play “The Mad March Heirs” was very good. Our Senior boys distinguished themselves in their play with an all boy cast. We were glad and proud to dedicate our annual to one who has devoted his time and energy for the im- provement of the school and its pupils. Sergeant Gruits—we congratulate you! The Senior class, and also the entire faculty and student body, was greatly grieved by the passing away of “Miss Hettie” Struthers. “Miss Hettie,” who often to!d us wasting time was a sin, had endeared herself to us by her interest in making better men and women out of us. Not even death can sever the bonds of love that make her ever dear to us. We were also grieved at the passing away of an other old friend, Mr. Carothers. Time after time our lockers have been opened by him, and he was ever present when needed. It was with deep sorrow that we also heard of the death of Betty Hartis, a member of the band and our class. We all knew that through thick and thin, Betty could be depended on—she always did her duty to the best of her ability. These, who have served us so faithfully these many yeirs, will always live on in our memories. Time goes on its way. It is up to us to take advantage of time and accomplish what we will. Having thus completed our high sch ool course, we look back with longing and wish to turn back the hands of the ever moving clock, a feat which is impossible. We face our future with eager eyes and clear minds. Our goals are coming into sight now that the veil of ignorance has been pushed aside. And so, dear N. H. H. S. we take leave of you with hearts bursting with gratitude. It is impossible to repay you for all you have done for us. We are leaving—richer in wisdom, purer in mind, stronger in spirit. We will always carry with us and cherish these beautiful memories. Au revoir— By Dimitra GEorGE. . - ce) saataspaianr Asana gyrase’?
