After a long day of sight seeing, I retired to 2 ff 3 . my soft comfortable bed in the Hotel. 1 , ' For many years I had been employed by the United I 'A Y States government to travel through the country H and report to head quarters at Washington D.C. The I ' conditions of the rural communities, and to inves- f 7 tigate to see whether their sanitary conditions s Q f were as specified by the President. This work was 4 H, very exhausting, so at times I retired to the Hotel 5 in Miami, Florida for a months vacation. During J A one of these intervals, and I had no sooner laid Q ' - my head on the clean, white pillow than my eyes I - A were closed in slumber. Q I After I had fallen asleep I began to dream. Q j I The time of my dream seemed to be years after I I 54-,yffa had been graduated from school. My mind wandered f , from city to city, from state to state,'until'I Q ,.,, 5.3-Fi came to my old home town, New Hampshire, Ohio. 5 As I was walking down the sidewalk whom did I 1 if gffaifif meet bui: Imogene Sowards, who had changed her Q - , ljf?g,15,, na me to Lenhart. This was no surprise to me. She Q fg7ZZ'Z55i looked slightly older even though she still retain- 4 j9QQf??f3ff. ed in a large measure her school girl complexion. Q We stood and carried on a conversation for some 5 i2jQ,jj2,,, time. Naturally, I wanted to know what had become 1 :fl-getgjfgfs of the rest of my classmates and of the faculty. Q g'.'gffQ,5gfgg After Imogene had told me that she was happily married and was living in New Hampshire with her 1 t-fQQ! 5iqi husband and twin daughters, we separated wishing f each other great success in life. ' Q My dream continued. Suddenly I was in Toledo, Q Ohio. While shopping in one of the large depart- 5 ment stores, I met another classmate, Jean Davis. 1 As we know Jean was interested in the boys as well f f:'iE'9 ?1'V ........... as in being a school teacher. I asked her her occ- Q .---. , upation and where she was living, Her answers I sq 5 was this, I am teaching English in one of the ' f 1 0 city schools in Toledo, I am not married, but I Q ' 4 'L' am attracted to a young man in the rooming house 5 .,,ll.-.-,-- where I am staying. She ended her conversation 1 with this, I hope to be married soon. f After Jean and I parted, I boarded a train to Q ?-If--25553 Columbus. While on the train, 1 met virginia 4 5 .- McPheron. She told me she was a welfare worker in Q gsfifiggig Columbus, I recalled that she was interested in I this kind of work while still in school. when we 5 5' ' ' arrived in Columbus, she invited me to go with Q her on a tour about the town the next da . When the cab came, who was driving it f I but Reid White. This was such a shock to me that Q g I could not help asking him a few questions. I I , told him that I expected to hear of him as a I 5 prosperous farmer living near New Hampshire and 5 I married to his High School sweetheart, Betty Barnes f ihis wasdReid's replyg 1Ruth as you know, farming Q s a goo occupa on u you cannot make enough I ' off of a farm at New Hampshire to support a wife ' , and seven children. I From Columbus my attention was drawn to Balti- f more, Mayyland where I saw another clas smate of 1 mine, Vernard Price. Here he was working in the Q Dupont Research Laboratory trying to invent a self I threading needle. Vernard told me that he had married his school chum Maxine Morris and they im- midiasegy had come to Baltimore where he was em- p eye y s company.
