-vu--nv--v NORMAN FRIES Principal Mr. Fries was born in Richland County, Wisconsin, and graduated from the Lone Rock High School. Following graduation from high school he went to Madison and worked for two year before attending the University of Wisconsin. He graduated from the University in 1935 with a major in Physical Education and history. Dxring the summer months of his college days he was employed on the playgrounds of Milwaukee. Ir: the fall of 1955 he was employed as coach at Galesville, Wisconsin, where he re- mained until March 1942 when he enlisted in the Navy. Mr. Fries coached basketball, baseball, and track and had very good success. After a lapse of ten years, he started foot- ball at Galesville in the fall of 1941. In 1942 three important events took place in the life of Mr. Fries. First he became a married man, second he was fortunate enough to have a basketball team in the state tournament at Madison, and third, he enlisted in the Navy on March 23 as a Chief Specialist in Athletics. Among his varied duties in the Navy, he served as assistant football and baseball coach at Western Michigan College at Kalamazoo, Michigan and head basketball coach at California Polytechnic College, San Luis Obispo, California. When the war ended, Mr. Fries was on duty in the Pacific Theatre. He is still in the -Naval Reserve and has the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Upon his discharge from active duty, Mr. Fries resumed his coaching duties at Galesville and in April, 1946, he became Principal of Schools in the same system. When the school district expanded through reorganization in 1949, he was appointed Principal of the new district, which position he held until he was appointed Principal at New Glarus in November, 1952. Mr. Fries was President of the Western Wisconsin Teacher Association of La Crosse in 1951. While at Galesville he was President of the Men's Club of the Pres- byterian Church and President of the Golf Club. At present, Mr. Fries is President of the Lions' Club in New Glarus -2-
