TIGER TALES New England N.D. 1982-1983 In loving memory, we dedicate our 1983 school annual to Mr. James A. Broton. In 1949 he came to New England Public. He was a coach, math teacher, chemistry teacher, principal, and later superintendent. His “Down in the Barnyard” song, sung at our Hootenanys, will always be with us. His inspiration and encouragement to students and faculty earned him respect and admiration. Superintendent: Mr. Pommerer Principal: Mr. Lechler Elementary Principal: Mr. Wobig School Board: Sitting-John Plaggemeyer. Judy Maixner, Marilyn Engraf, Renee Rettinger. Standing-Robert Waller. Ronald Strommen. 6 Janitors: Margret Koffler, Lorraine Stoltz, Richard Bartow. Mike Urlacher SENIORS 8 Shari Bohnhoff Sheldon Bohnhoff Jolynn Doe Elven Kaufman Kimberly Rustan Kaul Charles Klein 9 Lynn Kuntz Lora Morel Gina Rettinger Wesley Wilkens Mark Schaeffer Caroline Oberlander Charles Olson Theresa Steier 11 ’82 Class History We started school in the fall of 1970, with 39 students including: Nancy Doe. JoLynn Doe. Nancy Jeske. Rodney Redtzke. Rodney Nielsen. Gina Rettinger, Jeff Hewson, Mark Schaeffer, Elven Kaufman, Sheldon Bohnhoff, Daryn Gullickson, Charles Olson, Jamie Stang, Melanie Jalbert, Faith Farber, Stacy Schaible, Sarah Krenz, Amy Krenz, Derek Johnson, David Weiler, David Rettinger. Galen Anton. LaVonne Anton, Darrell Koppinger, Jana Wilkens. Wesley Wilkens, Shari Bohnoff. Lora Morel, Lynn Kuntz, Tom Koffler, Kari Haugen. John Hattlestead, Dean Benz. Theresa Steier, Kelly Bautz. Kim Rustan, Netty Gordon, Jeff Schulz, and Suzie Bargman. Because our class was so large, we were split into two groups. Mrs. Kirschman taught one class and Mrs. Johnson taught the other. Several of the highlights of our first year at school include the time that Mrs. Kirschman put Mark Schaeffer on the leash and led him to the lunchroom. David Weiler and Derek Johnson were constantly fighting and both spent a lot of time in the corner. Our class was considerably smaller at the end of the year, we lost David Weiler, David Rettinger. Darrell Koppinger. Tom Koffler, Kari Haugen, Stacy Schaible. Sarah Krenz. and Ray Krenz. The 2nd grade brought five new students: Jerry Heidt, Carrie Oberlander. Don Maixner, Beth Ehlis. and Missy Gentz. who all transferred from St. Mary’s. Having to get our immunization shots was our biggest worry. Charles Olson fainted from the dreaded BOOSTER SHOT, while the rest of us traded scars. Nancy and JoLynn were kicked out of Mr Morey’s music class for laughing and had to go back to the room while the rest of us sang. No one left that year. Mrs. Tews made the 3rd grade one of our favorites. We had reading wars trying to see who could read the most books, and we also had contests in the lunchroom at milkbreak, to see who could drink their milk the fastest. We lost Jana Wilkens that year. The 4th grade brought many changes to our class. Hubert Eble and Chuck Klein joined us that year. The girls and boys no longer hated each other and began to write love notes. The best love note of all was the one that Nancy Jeske wrote to Jeff Hewson Mrs. Austin tacked it up on the bulletin board for ALL of us to read. Charles Olson broke his leg playing a violent game of pom pom tackle and had to miss the annual picnic on the last day of school. Hubert Eble. John Hattlestead, Netty Gordon, Dean Benz. Derek Johnson left us. Mrs. Lambourn had a hard time telling our names apart in the 5th grade. The boys put tacks in their shoes and kicked the girls until someone accidentally kicked Mrs. Lambourn; all of the boys were sent to the office. Meanwhile, the girls devised the perfect plan to pass notes. One girl would put a note in the dictionary and leave it for the next girl to pick up and read. We all eventually got caught and had to write 500 word themes. The boys were put in THE BOX and were put in the back of the room. Rodney and Carrie were the hot couple and were nicknamed Romeo and Juliet. Jerry Heidt and Beth Ehlis both transferred to St. Mary’s. The 6th grade brought Fay Etta Bohlman to our class. We started band in January with Mr. Erdman, who ALL the girls had a crush on. Shari Bohnhoff stabbed Don Maixner with a compass and was later named KILLER. Daryn also had a good year, his favorite teacher, Mrs. Hanson lifted him out of his desk and threw him against the filing cabinets. Our class took a fieldtrip to Regent and everyone brought yo yo’s which were the latest fad. Jeff Schulz, Fay Etta Bohlman, and Suzie Bargman left. Netty Gordon rejoined us in the 7th grade, and Little rubber superballs were THE IN THING. Several of the memorable events of that year include the day that Mr. Wobig was an hour late for class, the bathroom door broke and 5 girls got locked in, and the day that Mr. Knutson threw his music stand at the band because Nancy and Carrie switched horns. No one left that year. Not much happened in the 8th grade. LaVonne Anton had a crush on Pat Walsh, and our basketball team won the Jr. High Championship. The highlight of the year was our 8th grade graduation party and hayride on Rainy Butte. Robert Binstock brought the highest price at the Freshman Initiation Sale. Drivers Ed was our favorite class and most of us soon began to drive. Mr. Reiter stepped on JoLynn’s squirt gun and broke it. Netty Gordon’s basketball party was the big social event of the year. Our Sophomore year brought financial problems. When we accidentally spray painted Oberlander’s pickup during homecoming week. Our skunk on our float did look better than the toilet we had the year before. We put on a Valentines Dance and used the money to repay Oberlanders. Daryn had another good year, he broke a window in the math room during the fall and later Mr. Haussler had to take him out of class to explain the meaning of a word that he used during the writing of the Freshman Initiation Creed. To top it all off, he stuck a scissors in an outlet in the Biology room. Smoke poured from the outlet and sparks flew across the room. Galen developed a new type of dissection which looked like something that had crawled out of a Nazi Concentration camp. Our Junior year began with the addition of Nadine Doll to our class. The Junior play brought many laughs. Daryn drove his motorcycle into the gym one night, and he came topless during dress rehearsal. When play day came everything went wrong. Daryn’s moustache rubbed off on Jamie’s cheek and Daryn shot Faith with a fire extinguisher. Prom time came and we surprised everyone by getting it done on time. It was one of the most original and beautiful proms that the school has ever seen. We proved to everyone that we could do anything if we put our minds to it. Our Senior year came at last. Kim Rustan became Mrs. Kim Kaul and had a beautiful baby girl named Christin Kaul. whom we all adore. Phy. Ed. proved to be very interesting when Galen Anton knocked Nancy Doe over and broke her glasses. We spent a lot of time running since we had to run all hour when we lost a baseball. We finally received some nicknames by the time we were seniors, Chuck Klein was CHUCKLES, Daryn was BRONCO, Elven was ELEVEN, and Charles was SPAZ. Daryn and Chuck’s home movies and commercials became very popular and won the coveted English IV Golden Globe Awards. Our favorite was Rocky III. Bette Basher left us in January. The senior girls put on a Senior Class Play which eventually took 6th at the District Contest. We also surprised Daryn by stashing pizzaburgers, noodlesoup, crackers, carrots, and sandwiches in his locker in case he didn’t get enough at dinner. Daryn and Chuck also spent a considerable amount of time in Mr. Lechler’s office that year. Throughout the years we’ve had our share of disagreements and problems but we’ve also laughed together, cried together, learned together and even grown together. We’ve spent some of the best times of our lives with each other in these last 12 years and the realization that we will soon be parting only makes us grow closer together. And together we, The Class Of ’82 shall graduate. 12 Val. Roberta Maixner Nancy Buzalsky Sal. Sherry Nielsen Bob Maixner Eric Moral Nancy Bohlman Janet Gatzke Lisa Clark Jana Wilkens David Wetler Jim Klein Cynthia Schwartz 14 Darrell Koppuiger Joyce Braun Marlene Frank Jolene Anton Vince Eisenbraun (Not Pictured) Allen Olheiser Darlene Bmstock Wayne Waller 15 Our first grade year started in the fall of 1971 with 18 students: Janet Gatzke. Bob Maixner, Sherry Nielsen, Lisa Clark, Nancy Bohlman, Brandon Johnson. David Ehlis, David Rettinger, Darrell Koppinger, Eric Morel. Lynnette Ming. Carla Lien. Jolene Anton. Cindy Schwartz. Aaron Hewson. Jim Klein. Trevor Dorner, and Tim Hatlestad. Eric started his favorite hobby right away though, and she stayed far away from him for a long time. Our teacher was Mrs. Thompson and Lisa liked her so much that she gave her a kiss on the last day of school. In second grade Jana Wilkens and Tracy Freer came to join our class as we suffered through the daily milkbreak. Aaron had a rough year. First he got sick and fell asleep on a of snoring he whistles in his sleep. Jimmy got mad at him later that year and hit him over the head with his schoolbag. Aaron’s head came through unscarred but Jimmy cried and cried over his broken schoolbag. We also put on our first play, Bambi. Most of us wanted the leading roles but Lisa was content to be the log. Things really changed in the third grade. We lost Lynnette. Tracy. Tim, and Brandon, but Roberta Maixner and Christopher Livingston came. We gave them both a hard time and Mrs Wilhelm gave us a lecture about a certain word we called Roberta. Mrs. Tews also threatened to make David Ehlis and David Rettinger wear diapers if they didn’t stop teasing Chris. Our attitudes changed considerably by the end of the year. Fourth grade came and we lost Chris but Phil Osbourn joined us. The best part of that year was getting dilly bars for lunch. Art was a favorite subject in fifth grade. We also spent a lot of time playing king on the hill and having water fights. Aaron lost out again in the sixth grade when quite a few rules were broken over his head. As a punishment for talking. Lisa. Sherry, and Aaron had to follow Mrs. Hanson around and do everything she did. After a few minutes of picking up imaginary pens and scratching imaginary itches she was laughing so hard that they got to sit down again. David Weiler was added to our class that year and Trevor and Phil left. However, the highlight of our year was when Lisa. Sherry, and Carla skipped school and went over to Lisa’s house to suntan on the garage roof. The phone kept ringing and finally when Mr. Lechler came over they decided to go back to school. The next few days were really scary and Carla was forbidden to every play with Sherry and Lisa again. They all swore they'd never do it again. But, oh well, at least they didn't do it again that year. Seventh grade brought Robert Petri and Nancy Buzalsky to our class while David Ehlis left. Roberta started her women’s liberation movement that year and when she said that girls were stronger than boys. David Rettinger decided to prove her wrong by putting on a wrestling hold while the whole class cheered them on from the sidelines. Joyce Braun joined us in the eighth grade. The word sick was really ‘‘in’’ that year. And unfortunately. David Rettinger broke his leg. High school started with three new students, Darlene Binstock, Marlene Frank, and Allen Olheiser. Homecoming was the big event. Many long hours went into the making of our skit and float. Aaron had to crawl across the stage in a diaper for our homecoming skit. He also got sold to the highest bidder in the slave sale. And Mr. Klein informed us that before we went to college that ‘‘first you have to be ALIVE.” We learned a lot of helpful things that year. Sophomore year we got first place for our homecoming float which was a spaceship Homecoming wasn't fun for everyone though. Buz broke her knee playing in the girl’s football game. David Rettinger started his strange habits like picking up pencils with his lips and Mrs. Jung let us spend a day talking about our middle names, especially hers which is Alma. Aaron started a roll of paper on fire in Biology while we were dissecting frogs. And Darrell started Lisa's hair on fire in the lunch line. The girls surprised the boys the last day of Phy. Ed. when they snuck down into the boys locker room and soaked their shorts. Three new students came our Junior year. Jeff Schoch, Jim Messer, and Mark Kilwein. Bob got put into the hospital for a long time when a tractor ran over him, Robert joined and left the football team quicker than expected, and David Weiler began his pudding eating career to give our class free days. The play was really great and fun to put on. A few complications came up when Nancy thought she was a bluebird, and right before the night performance. But they straightened themselves out with a little time and a few forgotten lines. The big event was the prom which was our responsibility. When we finally finished it. it was pretty nice. It’s too bad we can’t say the same about the band. Not only were they terrible, they also burned our stage curtains. We overextended our funds a little that year. Our senior year we were given a lesson in Economics because of our Junior year. So we decided to have a dance to make some money and we were fortunate enough to get a really great band called the Flakes. Vince Eisenbraun came this year but Jim and Jeff left. Homecoming was a big surprise because our float won again! It must have been because of our theme ‘‘Let The Tiger Spirit Soar” because the rest of it only took ten minutes. Mr Lechler went on a short trip and when the cat’s away the mice will play, so some of us had to serve a day of in school suspension Mr. Lechler called it senioritis and warned us about it ever happening again. Roberta and Mr. Schatz had some good conversations about politics in history and Bob celebrated the burning of the tractor that ran over him. Robert got a little careless and totalled the park’s girls bathroom and David Weiler really had an interesting year. First he continued his champion pudding eating expertise, then he ended up in Richardton while trying to get to Regent, and finally he ran into a few problems down at St. Marys girls dormitory. We’ve had a lot of wonderful times through the past years and the memories of those times will be carried in our hearts forever, just as we leave a part of ourselves with the school. And so with a fond farewell we. the class of “83’’, leave to further our lives the best we can. The graduating class of “1983”: Jana Wilkens. Janet Gatzke, Sherry Nielsen, Lisa Clark. Nancy Bohlman. The 1981 football season was filled with the success that has become “tradition” for Tiger football. In addition to the famil- iar, we saw some new changes. Coach Schatz returned to lead the Tigers to an 8-1 season. Coach Flaherty was also a new addition to the Tiger team, and as- sisted in leading the Tigers to victory. Some of the highlights of the 1981 season were the victory of the Tigers over Elgin, the successful Homecoming game against Scranton, and the night the Tigers came from behind, 24-8, to defeat Glen Ullin in the fourth period, 34-24. The Tigers first defeat came in the playoffs where they fell to Glenburn. All-conference players for 1981 were Jeff Hewson, Don Maixner, Rodney Nielsen, David Weiler, and Glenn Pladsen was named honorable mention. Each day of the week had a different theme, and students in grades 7-12 dressed up in garb that reflected those themes. Their dress ranged from outfits common in the 50’s to many kinds of “hats and shades”, to dress up, to anything orange and black. Coronation is always one of the most exciting parts of any homecom- ing, and this year was no exception. Crowned during half-time of the girls basketball game were Queen Melanie Jalbert and King Jeff Hewson. Quickly becoming a tradition at NEHS is the annual volleyball tournament. For the second year in a row the faculty were champions, defeating the seniors. Following the volleyball tournament was the parade. The sophomores won the float competition with the theme “give’em the shaft”. Friday night, of course, was once again the highlight of an exciting week. The Tigers defeated the Scranton Miners 32-0, and a good time was had by all at the dance following the game. 27 Football 1982 Row 1 L to R: Russ Dobitz, Greg Jung, Jody Doe, Paul Freidt, Bill Striebel. Robert Steier, Tim Richter, Coach Schatz The Tigers kicked off the 1982 season with a bang defeating Scranton 60-0. After closer games with Glen Ullin and Flasher the team was 3-0. People thought it would be another cham- pionship year, but much to the dismay of all Tiger fans the season was finished at 5-4. For the first time since 1977 the WRC crown slipped away. All WRC conference players were Bob Maixner and Aaron Hewson, Mark Kilwien earned honorable mention. Overall it was a season to be proud of. The girls started it out by defeating Golva 72-20. The excitement continued when they also defeated Reeder on Thursday with a score of 52-22. During the week students enjoyed different “dress up” days. Monday was hat and shades day, Tuesday was 50’s day. Wednesday was punk rock day, Thursday was dress up day, and Friday ended the week with orange and black day. One event that the whole school got involved in was the volleyball tournament. The faculty won it again by defeating the seniors Friday was the big day. The band lead the parade proudly and the seniors had the winning float entitled, Let Tiger Spirit Soar. The Hootenany was held in the afternoon with skits and cheers to fire up our football team. It was a beautiful night for a football game, and the Mighty Tigers played on a dry field, unlike many other games that were played in the mud. The game was most exciting with the Tigers defeating the Flasher Bulldogs 32-0. This left happy spirits for a good Homecoming Dance. 29 Girls Basketball 1981-1982 Cheerleaders: Kim Reisenauer. For the cookie grams FHA members worked from after school until 2:00 a.m. making heart shaped cookies with messages written out in frosting. Another highlight was FHA week where we asked the high school to dress up for the days that were planned, a couple of the most exciting days were Tuesday western security day, Wednesday career day, and Thursday dress up day. Other events were the National FHA Convention, sleep over, and the final activity will be the Parents’ Tea where we will thank the parents for all they’ve done. Last year’s Honorary Member was Melanie Jalbert; Outstanding Officer: Mary Ellen Trzynka; Outstand- ing Member: Amy Wandler; and Outstanding Freshmen: Maggie Trzynka. 45 Junior Class Play ’82 The Junior class presented their three act play, “A Ready-Made Family,” on April 5, 1982.
