A11 week long the defense has chipped away at the government's case against Alger Hiss, to prove that he had not seen Whittaker Chambers after January 1, 1937, and had not turn- ed over secret State Department documents to the ex-Coinraunist under- ground agents. Two months later a similar group were put on trial. A Group of twenty five scared freshmen attended the opening trial, which was at New England High School. The class consisted of: Mary Lou Hempel, Roberta Weiland, Mae Weiguim, Carol Wallner, Helmer Stenbak, Donald Schoraoh, Marie Reis- enauer, Phyllis Redetzke, Vinnoa Nieder, Carolyn Mealing , Robert Lutz, Karen Larsen, Douglas Kaffeler, Lois Jones, Shirley Johnson, Palmer Haugen, Darryl Gatzke, Melvyn Flyberg, Lloyd Farber, JoAnne Fancher, Orlin Erickson, Joan Erickson, Harry Botheim, and Joe Bolh- man. During our freshmen year we lost four members. After a rough beginning we went our ways becoming active in the many organizat- ions and getting acquainted with the other students. Under the direction of Miss Weise, our English teacher, a dramatic play was held entitled, Antic Spring, with Roberta, Donald, and Keren tak- ing part from our class. During our sophomore year we lost two members. With the help of the faculty and students a very successful carnival was held. As we advanced to higher classmen, we also advanced to more work. With the help of Mrs. Madsen and Mrs. Reinhsrd our activi- ties were a success. Our Junior-Senior Prom was a gay affair with a merry-go-round and all. Our junior class play, If Mother Only Knew, was a huge success under the direction of Mrs. Reinhard. During this year we gained three new members: Margaret Wegner, Joy- ce Jalbert, and Shirley Homelvig. In September 52 , we all started our senior year with much pep and vigor trying to make the best of our last year. We gained three new members at the beginning of this year: Jean W'oiwode, Janet Gilbert, and Donna Hafele. For our senior trip we motored to the Black Hills. We left on May 14, and returned on May 17. For many of us, we can't wait to get out of School, and we feel we will never miss it. On the other hand, many of us have great plans for the future. I'm sure, all of us will always remember our good times as well as the bad at good old New England Public School. ..................Joan Erickson Margaret Wegner 20 Class Poem The senior class of '53' Is a class of great variety. We're not too large and not too small. Our number being twenty-five in all. Through four long years we've made our way Toward our destination—graduation day. And now before we pass through the halls with time. We'll leave a remembrance for you in rhyme. Mr. Broton, the principal is our class advisor. It's his job because he's older and wiser. Mrs. Rienhard saw to it the annual was finished, And kept us going when our ambition diminished. At the head of the class, you'll find Joe, The editor, our president, and the most he seems to know. Jean Woiwode joined us this year from Mott, Ard we've enjoyed having her with us a lot. Of Donna Hafele we're all very proud. You see she's the artist in our crowd. On Margaret Wegner you can always depend When there's something to be done, she has a hand to lend. Roberta's future is uncertain, but I'll tell you this, She doesn't plan on remaining a miss''. Darrell Catzk9's good at singin and strummin. Look out Autrsy—competitions a 'comin. Lloyd on the gridiron is our star. He'd pick uo the pig-skin and carry it far. Carolyn played the sax in the band four years, But she enjoys western music most of all she hears. Ramona is the gal with the get up and go , And what she's up to next, no one will ever know. Carol Wallner is active in many things, Including FI LA, Pep Squad, and the Octette in which she sings. JoAnne Fancher's our gift to the business profession, In bookkesoing or typing she could give you a lesson. Orlin is always dreaming of life on his farm, After a certain girl comes down the aisle on his arm. 21 Bobby Luta is our treasurer and handles the dough. If you haven't paid your dues, believe me, you'll know. Janet is always busy as a bee. Because she got anxious and took high school in three. Marie's happy laughter can be heard for miles. She's always happy-go-lucky and bursting with smiles. Donny Schorsch is the olass cut-up and full of wit, With everyone he meets, he makes a hit. Joan is always busy with the men in her life, But right now she isn't interested in being anyone's wife. Joyce Jalbert is good at baking cookies and pie, She'll make a good homemaker for some lucky guy. Lois is talented, she has a lovely voice, But as for her future, she hasn't made her choice. Melvin is the quiet, thoughtful kind, And his pals say he's the best buddy a fellow can find. Shirley Johnson is always ready for laughter and fun, But she enjoys it most when it's with a certain one. Winnoa hasn't decided what life will hold for her, With her pleasing personality, she'll succeed, you can be sure. Phyllis is going to take a trip—she's going way out west. We wonder if man or money will be her conquest. Shirley Homelvig hasn't had enough—she's going back someday, She seems to think that teaching school is the way to earn her pay. There's one senior left and that's the poet, My name's Karen in case you don't know it. 22 Karen A. Larsen Honors JOE BOHLKAN VALEDICTORIAN. AWARD. WON FIR DISTRICT VOICE TEST.
