On March 28, the Cho- rus presented a concert in New York ' s Town Hall in celebration of Aaron Cop- land ' s sixty-fifth birthday year. Mildred Miller, leading mezzo-soprano of the Metropolitan Opera Company and an alumna of the Conservatory, was guest soloist at the concert. Mr. Copland himself as guest conductor for a portion of the evening ' s program ; the remainder of the program was conducted by Mrs. de Varon. Earlier, Mr. Copland had conducted a full concert of his works with the Chorus in Jordan Hall on March 10. The Copland concert was subsequently recorded by Co- lumbia Records. Immediately following this concert, the Tour Chorus traveled to Puerto Rico for a week of concerts, including a musical tribute to the renowned cellist Pablo Casals. It presented concerts at the Univer- sity of Puerto Rico in Sauturce, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Ponce. In addi- tion, it performed Mozart ' s REQUIEM in a Kennedy Memorial Mass at the Santa Teresita Church, Santurce. The Mass was celebrated by His Excellency Luis Aponte Martinez, Archbishop of San Juan. Cli- maxing the week-long tour, the Chorus made a television appearance on V I PR- TV, San Juan, on Sunday evening, April 4. Earlier this season, the full Conserva- tory Chorus performed and recorded for RCA Victor Gian Carlo Menotti ' s THE BISHOP OF BRINDISI with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and soloists Lili Choo- kasian and George London. It presented a Christmas Concert which included the New England premiere of Persichetti ' s TE DEUM. The Chorus also sang at the ded- ication concert of the Boston War Me- morial Auditorium, which included the world premiere of the CANTICLE OF PRAISE by Daniel Pinkham. 70 CONSERVATORY ORCHESTRA Frederik Prausnitz Conductor This year, the Conservatory Orchestra reached a highpoint in performance under the direction of Frederik Prausnitz. Many outstanding soloists, such as Richard Kapucinski, Grehard Mantel, and Robert Koff joined the orchestra in giving concerts which delighted critics as well as audiences. After starting the season with the SYMPHONY NO 5 of Anton Bruckner, the orchestra moved on to THE SEASONS of Antonio Vivaldi. This shows the great flexibility which our orchestra reached this year. It cannot be said the modem music was not represented. The orchestra played such interesting music as Stockhausen ' s GRUPPEN, Krenek ' s KETTE,.KREIS, UND SPIEGEL (conducted by the composer), and Egk ' s CHANSON ET RO- MANCE. Traditional music, such as Brahms ' SYMPHO- NY NO. 1, Stravinsky ' s PETROUCHKA, Beet- hoven ' s SYMPHONY NO. 8, and Elgars ENIG- MA ' ARIATIONS, was also ery well repre- sented. But the greatest achievement of the Conservatory Orchestra was in feeling and playing like a group. The Orchestra went on tour several times, play- ing in New York, Buffalo, Utica, and Marlboro, Mass. One of the associate first flutists made a speech during one of the tours which perhaps best describes the present feelings of the Orchestra and is here quoted; Avanti! 72 OPERA THEATER m. Thomas H. Philips, Jr. Director This year, Mr. PhilijDS assumed the responsibility of musical director, as well as stage director of the Oj)era Theater. In November, we presented a program of operatic scenes from: DON GIOVANNI, RIGOLETTO, and the complete second act of MADAMA BUT- TERFLY. On this same program, we branched out into WEST SIDE STORY and CAROUSEL for a taste of musical comedy. In the deep mid-winter of January, our major production— Britten ' s THE TURN OF THE SCREW — was given at the Loeb Drama Center of Harvard University. Mr. Philips staged the pro- duction and conducted the chamber orchestra. Pic- tures of that performances are shown on this page. March saw another large-scale scene recital con- sisting of scenes from: HANSEL UND GRETEL, XL TROVATORE, WERTHER, the complete third act of LA BOHEME, and the complete opera RIDERS TO THE SEA by Vaughan Wil- liams. Also in March — a double bill — Me- notti ' s THE OLD MAID AND THE THIEF and THE TELEPHONE, which toured the same month. In May, the Opera Theater pre- sented a double bill! Handel ' s ACIS AND GALATEA— staged and con- ducted by Boris Goldo sky, and Mar- tinu ' s THE COMEDY ON THE BRIDGE, staged and conducted by Thomas Philips, with the Conser atory Orchestra. 74 STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS STUDENT COUNCIL SEATED: J. Elson Club is now open to all conservatory students who maintain an average of C or higher. The purpose of Elson Club is to promote musical, social, and philanthropic pur- suits among its members. The Club raises and maintains a scholarship fund for which any undergraduate member is eligible. Activities include volunteer work in hospitals and homes in the Boston area. Concerts are given for the aged, and for handicapp ed and underprivileged children. Due to the record-breaking membership this year, we enjoy even more these and other activities which include our famous caramel apple sales, bowling and theater parties, teas and banquets. 1964-65 officers are: Carol Powell, President: Rae Palmer, Vice-President: Laura Nathanson, Secretary: Dorothy Allen, Treasurer: Robin Hendrich is an honorary member and the faculty advisor is Helen Keaney. 77 CONSERVATORY CLUB The objectives of the New England Conservatory Club are to promote higher ideals and a better understanding of music. The Founding Sisters wished to create a society which would inspire closer friendship among women music students, develop character and leadership, encourage high scholarship, and stimulate greater growth in the performance and appreciation of good music. Delta Xi Chapter was installed at the New England Conservatory of Music in 1950. Each year the chapter works with community workshops and social organizations, sponsors competitions for scholarships, and endeavors to do any and all things conducive to the betterment of women in music. 79 MU PHI EPSILON Mu Phi Epsilon, a national music sorority founded over 60 years ago in Cincinnati, aims to promote closeness between women in and studying for the music profession in schools all over the U.S.A. and the Philippines.
