Wallace Goodrich Dean of the Faculty WALLACE (lOODRICH, dean, organist. tcaclitT, conductor, was horn in Xcwton in 1H71. When only eifiht years of age, lie began the study of piano: l)Mt before very h)ng. the organ drew his interest and he undertook its serious study under Henry Duidiain. When still very young, he held several important organist positions and gave recitals in and around Boston. After studying (•ounteri)oint and composition with (leorge W. Chadwick, he went abroad where he contimied tiie study of the organ at the Royal Academy of Munich under Josef Rheinberger and conducting under Ludwig Abel. At the end of a year ' s work, he conducted an original work for chorus and orchestra, and was awarded a silver medal for organ and composition, — a signal recognition. The following year he studied with W ' idor in Paris, at the same time making a profound study of the remarkable development of the French organ nuisic. In 18{)()-1S!)7 he acted as coach and conducted ballets at the Municipal Theatre in Leipzig. When Mr. Chadwick l)ecame director of the Conservatory, Mr. Goodrich returned to Boston to join the faculty as a teacher of the organ. Ten years later he became dean of the faculty. In addition to his various duties. Mr. Goodrich was at one time organist of the Bo.ston Symphony Orchestra ( 18!)7-1!)0!)) and of Trinity Church ( 1})0 2- !!)()!)). He has been equally active as conductor. In 1!)() 2 he organized the Choral Art Society, conducting it for six years. For .several years he was conductor of the Cecilia Society of Boston and one of the conductors of the old Boston ()])era Comi)any. But his activities do not stoj) there. Mr. (ioodricli lias always been deeply interested in Church Music. In 1!)18 he became a member of the committee for the revision of tlie Episcopal Hymnal and secretary of the Joint Commission on Clunvli Music. Mr. Goodricli is also known as an author and composer. He has published educational works for the organ, and has written The Organ in Franc-e and .several essays on organ playing and (iregorian Music. Among his com|)ositions is an Ave Maria for chorus and orchestra. The school is indeed highly privileged in having at the head of its faculty a man of such rare intelligence and versatile accomplishments.
