THE NEUM Edited by THE NEUME BOARD for the Class of 1925 NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC THE ANDOVER PRESS ANDOVER. MASS. THE CONSERVATORY BUILDING In token of our esteem and gratitude we dedicate this class book to Jfreberitfe %. E rotubribge whom we have found to be especially the student ' s friend, broad of vision, large of heart. GEORGE W. CHADWICK Director George Whitefield Chadwick Direc tor IX writiiifi tlic life of our rospectod and beloved director we realized that there was a wealth of material from which we might choose the most outstanding features. In this brief outline we have attempted to give only the most important events in Mr. ( ' liadwick ' s life. George Whitefield Chadsvick, eminent com|)oser, conductor, author and educator, was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, XovemSer l. ' Jth, IS.l-J. lie attended the Conservatory as a student in the year 1S7 2, studying harmony with Dudley Buck and Stephen A. Emery. He sub.se(|uently had lessons in organ playing and com])osition with PjUgene Thayer. In 1S7() at the age of twenty-two, he went to Olivet College, Michigan, as head of the Musical Department. After a year at Olivet he resigned to go abroad for further study. In Leipzig (1877-1879) his ma.sters were Jadassohn and Reinecke. He com- posed industriously and won much distinction with his two string (piartettes, and an overture on the theme of Ri]) Van Winkle which were performed at the yearly examination. The latter made a marked impression on the Kuro])ean musicians who heard it. Their commendation was re])orted in Boston, and in 1879 the overture was given its first American presentation in Boston at a concert of the Harvard Musical Association. The year 1879-1880 was passed in Munich, studying composition and organ with Jo.seph Rheinberger. After his return from Europe in 1880, he joined the faculty of the Conservatory as a teacher of harmony and com])Osition. In 1897 Mr. Chadwick became Director. During his twenty-seven years of service, the school has grown to be a L niversity of Musical Art. Among his pupils are some of the most eminent American musicians including Dr. Horatio Parker, Ilem-y Iladley, Arthiu ' Whiting, Wallace (ioodrich, Erederick S. Converse, Edward Burlingame Hill, Mal)el Daniels and Daniel (Iregory Mason. Quoting from an article on Mr. Chadwick ' s life in the October 19-24 Musical Qiuirterli — we find the following statements: The appellation ' academic ' fits Mr. Chadwick perfectly, if the term is meant to denote solid scholarship and erudition. — and in another place. The .secret of his success as Director of the Conservatory is found in the following remark, ' The brain and heart are one thing and technic is another. You may cultivate the fingers, the throat, or whate er else is used, but without brain and heart there is no musical education! Yale University in 1897 awarded him the honorary degree of Master of .Vrts and in 190,1 Tufts College bestowed upon him the honorary degree of LL.D. In 1908 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is also a member of the Royal Academy of Elorence. Mr. Cliadwick s genius has been a constant ins])iration to us, and his kindly interest in each of us has been an unfailing guide in our progress. In expressing true loyalty and affection, the ( lass of 192.) unanimously sub- scribes it. self. WALLACE GOODRICH Dean of the Faculty Wallace Goodrich Dean of the Faculty WALLACE (lOODRICH, dean, organist. tcaclitT, conductor, was horn in Xcwton in 1H71. When only eifiht years of age, lie began the study of piano: l)Mt before very h)ng. the organ drew his interest and he undertook its serious study under Henry Duidiain. When still very young, he held several important organist positions and gave recitals in and around Boston. After studying (•ounteri)oint and composition with (leorge W. Chadwick, he went abroad where he contimied tiie study of the organ at the Royal Academy of Munich under Josef Rheinberger and conducting under Ludwig Abel. At the end of a year ' s work, he conducted an original work for chorus and orchestra, and was awarded a silver medal for organ and composition, — a signal recognition. The following year he studied with W ' idor in Paris, at the same time making a profound study of the remarkable development of the French organ nuisic. In 18{)()-1S!)7 he acted as coach and conducted ballets at the Municipal Theatre in Leipzig. When Mr. Chadwick l)ecame director of the Conservatory, Mr. Goodrich returned to Boston to join the faculty as a teacher of the organ. Ten years later he became dean of the faculty. In addition to his various duties. Mr. Goodrich was at one time organist of the Bo.ston Symphony Orchestra ( 18!)7-1!)0!)) and of Trinity Church ( 1})0 2- !!)()!)). He has been equally active as conductor. In 1!)() 2 he organized the Choral Art Society, conducting it for six years. For .several years he was conductor of the Cecilia Society of Boston and one of the conductors of the old Boston ()])era Comi)any. But his activities do not stoj) there. Mr. (ioodricli lias always been deeply interested in Church Music. In 1!)18 he became a member of the committee for the revision of tlie Episcopal Hymnal and secretary of the Joint Commission on Clunvli Music. Mr. Goodricli is also known as an author and composer. He has published educational works for the organ, and has written The Organ in Franc-e and .several essays on organ playing and (iregorian Music. Among his com|)ositions is an Ave Maria for chorus and orchestra. The school is indeed highly privileged in having at the head of its faculty a man of such rare intelligence and versatile accomplishments. RALPH L. Back Bay 0667 and Back Bay 4223 Evervl hing Jttr Ihf Batnl and Orchestra From Song to Symphony By DAMEL GREGORY MASON Second Year of a Study Course in Music Understanding Adopted by The National Federation of Music Clubs PRICE $1.50, NET This Manual of Music Appreciation presents the chief types of musical art in their sequence from the folksongs, the wild flower of music, to the fully developed symphony of the modern period. Its aim is to assist readers to distinguish for themselves the masterpieces of music, to understand their significance and respond to their appeal. The chapters are fully illustrated and give ample lists of reference books for collateral reading, together with lists of phonograph records and player- rolls that illustrate the text. The volume is an authoritative and stimulating handbook for students and general readers; and its purpose is the cultivation of discriminating listeners. PRAISE FROM PRESS AND PUBLIC A charming book in Mason ' s happiest style. I don ' t know which to admire more, his interesting way of presenting the necessary facta or the fresh contribution in the way of sidelights, record lists, etc. A fine book to follow Gehrkens ' Fundamentals. — Prof. Arthur E.
