CLASS OF NINETEEN HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN GEORGE W. CHADWICK. Director HE honors that came to Mr. Chadwick during our senior year will I be among the treasured recollections of the Class of 1916. His fame as a composer, established before most of us were born, was nationally and internationally increased through the recognition given him by the management of the San Francisco Exposition which a year ago invited him to conduct his Melpomene and Euterpe overtures in August last. The success of these performances, and the series of delight- ful social events arranged in the Director ' s honor by California alumni, must have had a valuable influence in adding to the reputation of the Conservatory on the Pacific Coast and elsewhere. The Tam O ' Shanter , based on Burns ' famous poem, which Mr. Chadwick wrote for the Litchfield County (Connecticut) musical asso- ciation last spring, was successfully performed during the season just past by the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Minneapolis and Boston — and with what eclat readers of the musical journals are familiar. Last winter several composers of Boston and the neighborhood got together and decided to form a club; their choice of president could, of course, be none other than the director of our New England Conservatory, whose long list of important compositions is impressive and, in the view of am- bitious youth, very stimulating. On account of these and other honors that have come to Mr. Chadwick during our stay at the Conservatory the Class extends its heartiest felicitations. Page Nine

CLASS OF NINETEEN HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN WALLACE GOODRICH, Dean of the Faculty MR. (lOODRICH should be congratulated by the Class upon having nearly completed twenty years of work as teacher and adminis- trator at the Conservatory, during which he has made a personal friend of every student with whom he has come into contact. In 1897, a young man just back from thorough and painstaking study of his profession abroad, he joined the faculty of this institution. In the years since then he has taught many young men and young women to value the best in organ music. Since his election as dean he has been mentor and adviser, always sympathetic and always clear-thinking, to the entire school. His little talks, as before fraternity meetings, liave betMi helpful and inspiring. In his conscientiousness regarding engagements and promises he has set an example not less useful than his teaching. The dean in some educational institutions is more or less of a police functionary, before whom the student goes with abashed face and trembling knees. None of our class has ever had any but the pleasantest relations with Mr. Goodrich, even when liable to well-merited reproof. To all of us he has personified personal kindliness, rectitude and justice. Page Eleven
