the new crusaders . . For each of a million yesterdays, man has carried the ban- ner of the contemporay cause. As each tomorrow arrives, another banner will wave, society attempts to vindicate it- se f. We, the children of the sixties, have come of age , and have inherited the banners of Civil Rights, Gun Control, 'and a situation in Vietnam. But why must we inherit these 'campaignsg why do these negative conditions persist? Can we measure the amount of human dignity which has been violated on grounds of nationality, as well as race? How much of the future did we lose-how many of our leaders were assassinated before a banner for Gun Control was raised? And why must a state of large-scale hostility exist before Peace receives attention? We can see that society has never anticipated, and could therefore never prevent these discouraging plights. I t's inherent in the abstract concept of society that reaction is the only form of primary action, since when a belief becomes a proven reality, we try to make up for lost time , and overcompensate. But adequate compensation is different things to different people. And success can never be imminent as long as the reactionary complacency and the revolutionary fanaticism imposeabar- rier to cooperation. There is a necessity, therefore, for a meeting at some medium. We need the strength and sage of old foundations. But should those who see the dawn of a new age wait for the blind to tell them that the sun is rising over the mountains? Time has decreed that a new order come forth, possessed of conscientious foresight. This order has assumed the role im- plied by you're welcome , and now it is for others to say thank you . They are the new crusaders. This book is dedicated to the new crusaders. The late Lenny Bruce once wrote, There is only what is. The what-should-be never did exist . . 3' M ust this message to a previous generation stand true? . . . and so a new generation comes into the seventies, uni- ted with the dream that it is they who can make the what- should-be, the what-is . . . This book is dedicated to the new crusaders . . .
