Foreword So that in' the years to come we may turn these pages, live once more the carefree days of our lives. and see again the faces we once knew: so that our troubles and our joys, our deeds and ou.r lives in the space of TIME shall not be lost forever in obscurity, we, the class of Nineteen Hundred' Fifty Seven, offer you this SHAWNEE as a 'pleasant and lasting memory of ourselves and classmates. If by doing this we can keep our high school days forever near us, and the memories of them alive in our hearts, we shall know that our humble efforts have not been unrequited. If we can enable ourselves to carry with us through life the spirit of our NCHS years, the spirit of youth, of perseverance, and the happiness, we shall know the pleasure of a task well done.

NEW CUMBERLAND HIGH SCHOOL . . has undergone important changes since its construction in 1928 to provide vital facilities for a growing curriculum and student body. To the original building, with its twelve classrooms surrounding the gymnasium, were added a music room, office wing, northwest classrooms. and a band room between 1935 and 1948. The 1956 building program remodeled older parts of the school plant and supplied eleven new Classrooms, a cafeteria, home economics suite, a nurse's quarters. Although the ex- pansion program has filled the school site with a huge rambling building, classroom needs fall far behind because of yearly enrollment increases. While legal technicalities and court procedures still delay construction of the West Shore Joint High School, operation squeeze becomes more difficult each year.
