The -iointure of New Cumherland with Fairview 'I'ownship, Goldsboro, l,ewislierry and Newluerry Township to operate grades 7 through ll has made the planned addition to the high school liuilding vitally necessary. A total of N43 students attend classes in hoth the junior and senior high schools. 9 SH.-XXYNHH . . . in times past Indian moccasins made trails along these waters, rigfzl, and named them SH.-XNYNl'lli. Today Shawnee waters have lxecome the Yellow Hreeches Creek where students swim, hoat and fish. Shawneetown, on the site of present-day New Cumberland, was cstalmlishcd as a trading post in 1688. Located across the usually placid Susquehanna from Harris lferry, now Harrisburg, capital of Pennsylvania, the station became a cross-roads for travelers south and west. From this early settlement has grown a prosperous sulmurhan community of 6,5oo, the third largest town in Cumberland County. 2
