Today Shawnee waters have lxecome the Yellow Hreeches Creek where students swim, hoat and fish. Shawneetown, on the site of present-day New Cumberland, was cstalmlishcd as a trading post in 1688. Located across the usually placid Susquehanna from Harris lferry, now Harrisburg, capital of Pennsylvania, the station became a cross-roads for travelers south and west. From this early settlement has grown a prosperous sulmurhan community of 6,5oo, the third largest town in Cumberland County. 2
