. . . in times past Indian moccasins made trails along these waters and named them Shawnee. Today Shawnee waters have become the Yellow Breeches Creek where students swim, boat, and fish. Shawneetown, on the site of present day New Cumberland, was established as a trading post in 1688. Located across the usually placid Susquehanna from Harris Ferry, now Harrisburg, capital of Pennsylvania, the station became a cross-roads for travelers south and west. From this early settlement has grown a prosperous suburban community of 6500, the third largest town in Cumberland County. 5

161 FCDREWCDRD 1929-1954 . . , twenty-five years of growth and progress and change . . . a quarter of a century marked by depression and wars, by incredible advances in science, medicine, industry, and engineering . . . an era distinguished by stream- lined automobiles, labor-saving appliances, television entertainment, let planes- and nuclear fission. Although methods of teaching, courses of study, and school activities have changed, school kids have not. Their worries, their interests, their feelings are the same. So, we present the 1954 SHAWNEE to recall for old grads their happy days in New Cumberland High School.
