NEW CUMBERLAND JOlNT SCHOOL SYSTEM . . . began operation April 28, 1950, when New Cum- berland entered into an agreement with Fairview township, Goldsboro borough, Lewisberry borough, and Newberry township, all located in York County. This system includes grades 7-12 with approximately 302 pupils in junior-senior high school from York County areas. The student body has grown from 220 when the building was first occupied in 1929 to 760 today. The class of 1929 had 42 graduates, the class of 1954, 118. This larger enrollment as well as new courses have increased the faculty from 10 in 1929 to 36 in 1954. The one-time purely academic course was supple- mented by the introduction of a commercial course for the class of 1929. ln the following years, 1930-32, came some of the so-called frills and fancies of modern education. A recognized physical education and health department and general shop were included in the course of study. By 1943 it was apparent that more courses were needed for the general student. Senior science, general math, senior math, and world geography gradually filled these needs. The class of 1954 includes 36 academic, 29 commercial, and 53 general students. The 1953-54 school year has brought need for necessary changes due to increased en- rollment. Plans for a further iointure between the West Shore and the New Cumberland Joint School Systems for the purpose of operating a new senior high school are gradually being realized. An agreement has been signed but actual building construction is temporarily held up awaiting clarification of certain rulings of the state Department of Justice. 131

. . . in times past Indian moccasins made trails along these waters and named them Shawnee. Today Shawnee waters have become the Yellow Breeches Creek where students swim, boat, and fish. Shawneetown, on the site of present day New Cumberland, was established as a trading post in 1688. Located across the usually placid Susquehanna from Harris Ferry, now Harrisburg, capital of Pennsylvania, the station became a cross-roads for travelers south and west. From this early settlement has grown a prosperous suburban community of 6500, the third largest town in Cumberland County. 5
