1) new Castle High shown in 1929 with the recently built east wing annex. 2) The high school in the early 60 s with the new field house added in 1957. On July 26,1907, the Mew Castle School District purchased a large piece of land located on Lincoln Ave. from Mrs. Qeorge Berger for $37,500. Tour years later in September of 1911, the newly erected Mew Castle High School was ready to begin its fall classes. THAT WAS THEM ... Enrollment at this time was 269 freshmen, 190 sophomores, 92 juniors and 94 seniors, a total of 645 students. The first graduating class of the new Me-Ca-Hi. the class of 1912, made up of 90 students. Mr. Qeorge Dickson was the principal of the school, which had 30 classrooms and a student capacity of 1200. THIS IS MOW ... The 1986-87 enrollment consists of 352 freshmen, 274 sophomores, 262 juniors, and 237 seniors, a total of 1125 stu- dents. This year's graduating class is made up of students. Mr. Frank Datillo is the present principal of Me-Ca-Hi and has been since 1978. SOME FACTS . . . The smallest graduating class of Me-Ca-Hi was the first class of the Lincoln Ave. building, the class of 1912. -The largest was in 1969, with over 600 students. -In 1922. a vocational shop was added to the building. -A new east wing was added to the building in 1927 to accomomdate the rapidly growing number of students attending Mew Castle High. -1957 saw the birth of our very own field house built to accomondate the many fans who attended Me-Ca-Hi intermural athletic events. -Renovations that accompanied the 1957 addition included the main hall, the wood and metal shops, the nurse's office, the homemaking suite, the chemistry labs, and the cafeteria kitchen. -The total cost of the beautification of the building came to $2,000,000. -In 1986. some energy saving ' renovations were made. All throughout the building and field house the large windows were cut in half by insulation. Four chemistry classrooms and two labs were also renovated, the first time since 1957. THE TRADITIOM COMTIMUES ... If the walls of Me-Ca-Hi could talk, they'd reveal every different aspect of school life from 1911 until now. Of course times change, people change, ideas and morals change, but no matter how long ago the tradition started, or how long it will xcontinue into the future one thing will never change: WE ARE ncmIII 75th Anniversary 3
