w The first class. Class of 1912. to graduate from the new Ne-Ca-Hl. Turn to page 16 and compare the 75 year difference with the Class of 1987. 2 75th Anniversary 1) new Castle High shown in 1929 with the recently built east wing annex. 2) The high school in the early 60 s with the new field house added in 1957. On July 26,1907, the Mew Castle School District purchased a large piece of land located on Lincoln Ave. from Mrs. Qeorge Berger for $37,500. Tour years later in September of 1911, the newly erected Mew Castle High School was ready to begin its fall classes. THAT WAS THEM ... Enrollment at this time was 269 freshmen, 190 sophomores, 92 juniors and 94 seniors, a total of 645 students. The first graduating class of the new Me-Ca-Hi. the class of 1912, made up of 90 students. Mr. Qeorge Dickson was the principal of the school, which had 30 classrooms and a student capacity of 1200. THIS IS MOW ... The 1986-87 enrollment consists of 352 freshmen, 274 sophomores, 262 juniors, and 237 seniors, a total of 1125 stu- dents. This year's graduating class is made up of students. Mr. Frank Datillo is the present principal of Me-Ca-Hi and has been since 1978. SOME FACTS . . . The smallest graduating class of Me-Ca-Hi was the first class of the Lincoln Ave. building, the class of 1912. -The largest was in 1969, with over 600 students. -In 1922. a vocational shop was added to the building. -A new east wing was added to the building in 1927 to accomomdate the rapidly growing number of students attending Mew Castle High. -1957 saw the birth of our very own field house built to accomondate the many fans who attended Me-Ca-Hi intermural athletic events. -Renovations that accompanied the 1957 addition included the main hall, the wood and metal shops, the nurse's office, the homemaking suite, the chemistry labs, and the cafeteria kitchen. -The total cost of the beautification of the building came to $2,000,000. -In 1986. some energy saving ' renovations were made. All throughout the building and field house the large windows were cut in half by insulation. Four chemistry classrooms and two labs were also renovated, the first time since 1957. THE TRADITIOM COMTIMUES ... If the walls of Me-Ca-Hi could talk, they'd reveal every different aspect of school life from 1911 until now. Of course times change, people change, ideas and morals change, but no matter how long ago the tradition started, or how long it will xcontinue into the future one thing will never change: WE ARE ncmIII 75th Anniversary 3 1) Mr Davis' chemistry class-tnis is as hard as it gets! 2) A meal fil for a president 3) Mr Hamilton enlightens his Honors World Cultures class with a brilliant statement. 4) You're cute!' 5) Two cute guys-QeOe Razzano Tom Piccione just hanging out. 4 Opening Q: WHAT'S HEW? This is a very easy question for these students because it's always the topic of conversation in class, between periods, during lunch, or anywhere two people possibly meet. For some of our students the response is always the same- nothing! Of course academics and discipline are very important in high school, but as these pictures suggest, we all need time to just lay back and chill outll mm 3 ■ wm These pictures prove that is for real. Anytime, any-e during the day someone ind doing something unre-lut we were lucky and found in the act. 4. Scott Wyman— gives a little glare to passers-by. 5. The ballroom was beautifully decorated to the theme of “Masquerade. Those in attendance enjoyed music provided by “Split Second. Pictures were taken by Clark Studio. All seniors were presented with a commerative glass upon leaving the prom. Most of those in attendance then traveled out of town for dinner to complete this memorable event. Class President Vince Sands monitors the collection cans in lunch as Diana Joseph points out a newpaper article to him. Student council held an unusual fundraiser for Childrens hospital this year. The student body chose six candidates for the title of Mr. Christmas, and, each day in lunch, students voted for their favorite guy by placing money in a can with the candidates name on it. Senior class officers helped student council advisor Marry Micco in collecting and counting the money. $500 was raised for Childrens hospital, and Marc Zingaro was named Mr. Christmas after collecting the most money. WE DO! You may not realize how important these people are in our daily school life! Every day, the secretaries read the announcements to start off our morning. Throughout the day, besides their secretarial duties, they run off tests, take messages from our parents, and return forgotten books, lunches, and gym clothes. The cafeteria staff begins to fix lunches for the entire student body in the morning, and pleasing us is quite a task. With the new food service brought to Ne-Ca-Hi second semester, there is a better selection of lunches, which the students accepted gratefully. Finally, the custodial staff deserves a lot of credit. Besides cleaning up after students, which may take hours, they make repairs in our school and keep it running. So you see, these members of the staff are an important part of our day at Ne-Ca-Hi, and they deserve our many thanks. Mrs. Bette Qunn Row 1 Donna Caravella. Yet they imagined by June they 'd produce the best yearbook possible. There's more to making a yearbook than most people think. The staff worked especially hard this year and now hopes that everyone who looks at this yearbook will be as proud of it as they are. A big thanks to the senior staff members, Maria DeMase, Kim Mraz, Rhonda Mounts, Maria Moviello, Tom Piccione, and David Rankin for trusting me and allowing me to always be on top of things. Thanks to my only classmate on the staff, Tammie Krolicki, for always willing to help. To the sophomores, Larry Amodie, Melissa Caraway, April Rio, and Sue Ann Yerage. thanks for putting up with my endless orders. Finally to Mr. Anthony DeLuca, my advisor, thanks for having faith in me to always get the job done right, but remember, it takes two! I'd also like to acknowledge those who helped greatly in the production of this book: Mr. Larry Intihar, Sales Representative. Jostens Publishing Co., Mr. Carl Clark, Mr. Frank Datillo, Mr. Angelo Fomataro, Mrs. Lucille Dailey, faculty, and student body of Tie-Ca tli. Congratulations and best wishes to all the graduating seniors, and to the underclassmen, see you next year! Sincerely, Maxine Robles Editor, 1987 Fergodian CLOSING
