They stood behind their team and supported them to the end. These girls, too. worked with Y.S.CI. cheerleaders at a one-day clinic to create and learn new cheers. The basketball season ended with a great banquet from the Basketball Boosters. The cheer leaders and advisors thank the Boosters for this event. However, this group does a lot of cheering throughout the year — ninth grade basketball and ninth grade football games and wrestling meets. The girls worked very diligently while they “created” many new cheers this year. This squad also cheered at a junior varsity basketball game. Finally, a special thanks to these girls for earning money for the squads while selling “Hurricane Seats” at the varsity football games. 50 Majorettes Jamie Dougan. Captain — Emma Jo Malizia. Captain — Marla Giangiulio, Adrienne Trotta. This year the featured twirlers did a fine job on the field during the halftime performances; when the time came for them to perform, they showed that they had a lot of school spirit and they gave some of the best performances of the year. The senior featured twirlers are Marla Giangiulio and Emma Jo Malizia who have been featured twirlers for the past three years. New Castle’s Featured Twirlers of 1984 1985 helped make this year's performance a success. 51 THE DAZZLING CANDY CANES ROW ONE: Renee Fazzone. Nicki Monico. Alissa Quahliero. Danell Stone. Michelle Reno 72 73 I wish I could express my gratitude to all the people of New Castle who have made of this year an unforgettable experience. I'm afraid that gratitude goes farther than just words, it's something I feel and I carry in the very deep of my heart! It has been a great pleasure to have had these ten months to share with you. which sometimes seem to be just ten days. The idea of meeting new people different cultures and different customs seemed to be something very interesting before I came to New Castle, but today, looking backwards and analyzing what my life has been in these past ten months, and what it will be for now on I realize that it has been a lot more than that, it has been something simply marvelous! I sincerely believe that and that wouldn't be possible if I didn't come to New Castle, which has definitely been the right place ' to me. I thank very especially the DiMuccio family, who have been like a real family to me. and who will always be my second family. I also want to thank in a special way a few people who I really consider very special to me for what they have done for me. and for what I shared with each one of them. After all this time living, sharing and being part of New Castle I really feel with pride and pleasure to say I am N.C. too. I love all of you! 74 CLASS OF 1985 CLASS COLORS: Royal Blue and Ivory CLASS MOTTO: If you can dream it you can become it; If you can imagine it you can achieve it. CLASS SONG: WHATEVER WE IMAGINE by James Ingrim CLASS POEM PATHWAYS TO THE FUTURE Glancing in the direction of the pathways we have made. We see our future unfolding with the foundation we have laid. Beginning as underclassmen, our journey brought us pride. Through lessons and lasting friendships that made the CLASS OF ’85! 83 was an uphill climb: as beginners at Ne Ca Hi. Longing to make it for three more years; giving it our best try. The friends we've made, the times we shared, the lessons we have learned. Inspired us to fulfill the dreams that each of us has yearned. 84 brought us the courage to continue on our way. Making our share of mistakes, but learning with each new day. Our sights were set to be SENIORS; That was what we did seek. Knowing with the end of our junior year that we had finally reached our peak. 85 gave us the chance to sit back and enjoy the ride. Having the pleasure of sharing it all with true friends at our side. As graduation was drawing nearer we saw our futures around each bend. With each student finding their aspirations at a different road's end. Before going our separate ways: we took our final walk together. As we traveled across the stage, knowing we would cherish that moment forever. Preparing us for the future. Ne-Ca-Hi has given us the key. The team placed second in their section and qualified for the W.P.I.A.L. team playoffs. During the first round of the playoffs the N.C. golfers defeated Ellwood City, but were knocked out of the playoffs by Plum and North Allegheny. The team also made a fine showing at the Tam O'Shanter Invitational by placing third out of an 18 team field. An individual standout was Scott Culley who not only took second place at the Tam O'Shanter invitational, but also was the only N.C. team member to advance to the W.P.I.A.L. Championships. 102 Scott Culley. Pete Medure. 1984-85 NEW CASTLE RED _ Row 1: Harry Gustafson. Vince Marzula. Nick Perrotta. John Jacobs. Greg Solomon — Capt Mike Hines — Cap!.. Dave Rubin. ClmW C ya at the goal line. When the 1984 football schedule was released in Janu ary. the Red Hurricanes found themselves in the Quad A Western Division. The Canes were not expected to be able to compete against the big boys of the forth coming season. June signifies the start of summer practices for the team as they gather at Taggart Stadium under the leadership of Coach Lindy Lauro. The Summer workouts last until the beginning of August, then the team gathers at Coopers field for a few practices. After this, the team is off for Camp Rentz. This camp is the summer home for the team. We spend eight fun-filled days at our summer home. After camp the team is ready for the regular season. The season started off slowly, with the first game ending in a tie. The team settled down and rebounded to reel off nine straight wins. The Canes not only won the Western Division but also proved to everyone, and to ourselves, that we could play with the big boys of the Quad A. Highlights of the year were the games vs. Mt Lebanon and North Hills The play of the year was probably when quarterback Scott Gattey avoiding the swarm ing Mt. Lebanon defense by threading a pass between two defenders to tightened Joe Carnuche. This play signified to the fans and to the players that this team was a winner. This team doesn’t have much size, but does have an abundance of heart and NEVER SAY DIE attitude. Other highlights of the season included the individual performances of runningback Greg Solomon and widereceiver Mike Hines. The regular season ended with the Canes in first places as the Canes headed into the playoffs. The first opponent was Connellsville with the Canes easily winning 17-0. The Canes next opponent was Gateway, the game was being played at Butler High. On this cold November night, a fired up Gateway Team ended the Canes Miracle Season. Our dreams of a perfect season along with a championship came to an abrupt halt. We proved to ourselves and to many other people that size isn't everything, it s whats inside a person that counts. It had been a great year for we Seniors and for the rest of the Hurricane team. This team caught and won the hearts of the city. Some of the fans called this football team the greatest New Castle team ever. We had a lot of great times playing football for New Castle and we wouldn't trade those times for anything. But if you asked anybody associated with the team if there was something missing, they would reply a W.P.I.A.L. CHAMPIONSHIP by Ron Shaw 109 Freshmen Football Row 1: Gavin Reitnauer. Robert Kerr. The play was set in a New York City apartment shared by three men and three women, all trying to get a break on Brodway. Comical situations arose as the six young actors tried to get a big producer to see their performance. while trying to keep their living arrangement a secret, from one girl’s father and even the landlady. With only four weeks of rehearsal, the play was a great success. CAST George BodelL Norman Reese. Mrs. Garnet.. Tony Dennison Muriel Foster.. Kate Ault..... Marge Benson. Dottie Coburn .. Frank Dattilo To the Class of 1985: One of life's most important rights of passage is graduation; a pause between the time of preparation and the time of application, a celebration of the past and a commitment to the future, a ceremony of both hope and remembrance. It is my hope that you have made the most of your high school experience and that you will be equal to the challenges that lie ahead. On behalf of the entire staff, may I offer congratulations and best wishes for a full and productive life. Sincerely, Frank Dattilo 157 High School Administration Angelo Perrotta.
