When we think of the fifties we think of soda shops, juke boxes, “Happy Days, letter sweaters, poodle skirts, bobby sox, saddle shoes, white t-shirts, greased hair, hot rodding, good times, and SOCK HOPS! New Castle’s student body takes a night off to travel back through time to some good ol’ fun at our 50’s SOCK HOP! Our AFS STUDENT Duane. Mrs. Shubcrt, and Andy enjoy a cup of lea lo start the day off right. Andy enjoys listening to modern music; here he is putting one of his favorites on the turn table. Looking back I suppose that deciding to leave one’s own country for a year is a pretty radical thing to do. However I’m having a wonderful experience here. I’ve met some new friends. I’ve seen many new things. I’ve been through lots of new experiences. I’ve broadened my outlook and found lots of new interests. Even though I certainly look to July 1980 when I will step on English soil again, I will certainly find it very hard to leave this wonderful town and the people I've met. This has been quite an experience for me. We all leave school with memories. I’m going to take lots of memories back to Sedgley, England. H A family portrait. Andrew with his American father, Mr. Doyle Shubert. Duane and Andy make quite a musical team playing, picking, and singing together. A star is born! Kathleen Morris The game of life is not so much in holding a good hand as playing a poor hand well. 136 Pythagoras used to say life resembles the Olympic Games; a few men strain their muscles to carry off a prize; others bring trinkets to sell to the crowd for a profit; and some there are who seek no further advantage than to look at the show and see how and why everything is done. They are spectators of other men’s lives in order better to judge and manage their own. We have watched three school years go by and three yearbooks start from ideas and end in hardback form. We could give an indepth explanation of the production process, but that really doesn’t matter now. Being on the staff our senior year, we have been able to capture memories to look back on. We have tried to mention every activity in which the New Castle Senior High School student body participated. Do you remember band camp, homecoming, senior night, the candy sale, the Air Force band, the strike, Christmas vacation. New Year’s Eve, locked bathrooms, Easter vacation, the play “MASH”, the prom-dinner dance, the all-night party, class day, commencement, our A.F.S. student, our “FAVORITE” teacher, co-ed gym, wine and ivory, “Back Down Memory Lane,” Dawn of a New Decade, your high school sweetheart, your friends? Will you always remember? This book was designed to help us recall all this and more when we become “forgetful.” Take care and may God Bless you. 140 141 Freedom of religion; freedom of the press; freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus; and trial by juries impartially selected,-these principles form the bright constellation which has gone before us, and guided our steps through an age of revolution and reformation. —Thomas Jefferson 142 Expectation in a weak mind makes an evil greater and a good, less: but in a resolved mind it digests an evil before it comes; and makes a future good, long before present. Our unspoken understanding As meaningful as the peace dove. For twelve years, we have grown Loving, caring, sharing. Now we must meet life eye to eye Cautious of what it is hearing. Like pawns on a chess board Going right and wrong ways. Difficult as life may soon seem We must not get lost in the maze. As travelers through life We have lessons to learn. Be ever so mindful my friend. Drive carefully around the turn. The laughs and tears we’ve shared Followed by more in time Will join together in our minds Like a delicately versed rhyme. Adventures may not be Apprehended as one. But dreams and hopes for everyone Reach a limitation of none. We all have our own way Distinct, unique talent. So give the world your biggest smile Do it, just make the pieces fit. As travelers through life We’ll see new become old. Doing our best at all we try. Going through uncertain, being bold. FAITH GOES BEYOND WHAT WE CAN SEE A stream can have no ending, For the ocean never ends, A path winds on, though we can’t always See around it’s bends, Our view must stop where earth meets sky. But both stretch on and on. We cannot see our loved ones. Still we know they are not gone — For God has promised us a home Through all eternity. Where life and love continue Far beyond what we can see. Mary Dawson Hughes Calvin Decarlo 12 12 26-7 12 79 Mr. Dicarlo was an elementary teacher at Croton School. He was an English and Special Education teacher, assistant principal and principal at Ben Franklin Junior High.
