 IN THE NEWS (LAWRENCE COUNTY)—In 1913 New Castle was devastated by the most disastrous flood in its history. The first Public Library was built and the highway system in the area was completely revamped. Throughout the war and most of the twenties the energies and resources and of the community were almost exclusively devoted to rebuilding what had been destroyed in the 1913 flood. IN THE NEWS—The United States of America embarked upon its second century in relative peace and calm. The late nineteenth century was one of expansion and consolidation and was marred only by the brief Spanish-American War. For the first time America divorced herself from Europe and European pursuits and began more typically American modes of entertainment such as Baseball. II

IN THE NEWS—The first decades of the twentieth century saw America convulsed with change. The horror of the First World War, (the war that unfortunately did not “end all the war”) gave way to the post-war slump and finally the boom years of the twenties. Americans lived high in these properous and decadent times when many felt the United States was morally bankrupt and wondered where it would all end. It all ended on Wall Street with the great crash of ’29. 13
