IN THE NEWS—The United States of America embarked upon its second century in relative peace and calm. The late nineteenth century was one of expansion and consolidation and was marred only by the brief Spanish-American War. For the first time America divorced herself from Europe and European pursuits and began more typically American modes of entertainment such as Baseball. II

IN THE NEWS (Lawrence County)—During this time New Castle reached its peak with the establishment of two steel mills and some of the world’s largest tin plate mills. Numerous mills, factories, and plants of all manner were set up in Lawrence County and vicinity and the resulting influx of people caused the city to swell to almost 30,000.  IN THE NEWS (LAWRENCE COUNTY)—In 1913 New Castle was devastated by the most disastrous flood in its history. The first Public Library was built and the highway system in the area was completely revamped. Throughout the war and most of the twenties the energies and resources and of the community were almost exclusively devoted to rebuilding what had been destroyed in the 1913 flood.
