NEW CASTLE HIGH SCHOOL NEW CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA IN THE NEWS (Lawrence County)—John Carlysle Stewart, along with two brothers-in-law, John and Hugh Wood, and John McWhorter, came to this area from New Castle, Delaware, and Stewart laid claim to about 400 acres of land. Fifty of these acres he began to lay out as the town of New Castle. This area was between Apple Way and the West Washington Street Bridge. Later, John Elliott built the area’s first grist mill on the Neshannock Creek. All things must change To something new, to something strange: Nothing that is can pause or stay. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 2 IN THE NEWS—The American Colonies, declare themselves independent of the British Empire, after attempts at peaceful settlement of differences fail. After a successful revolutionary war they establish themselves under the Articles of Confederation. This effort fails. These articles are replaced by the Constitution of 1789 which is soon ratified. In 1791 Western Pennsylvania citizens attempt to stage a revolt due to “intolerable liquor taxes”, the effort is crushed and the newly formed United States of America survives. 3 IN THE NEWS (Lawrence County)—A fort is built on Washington Street between Apple Way and Mercer Street as protection against Indians and the British. With a population of 300, New Castle becomes a Borough and its first newspaper “The Register” goes into publication. During this time the area grows rapidly and indus-tializes gaining tanneries, lumber mills, and a glass factory. At this time Lawrence County is officially formed. Is it so small a thing to have enjoyed the sun, to have lived light in the spring, to have loved, to have thought, to have done? Matthew Arnold IN THE NEWS—Due to British Conscription on American vessels the United States declares war on England. The City of Washington, D.C. is burned by British troops but American sea victories and Napoleonic threats in Europe force tl c English to sue for peace. The northern section of the country begins industrialization and develops a strong textile industry; conversely the southern section maintains a basically agrarian system. The promise of instant wealth draws many from the populous East to settle in the new Louisiana and California territories. 5 IN THE NEWS (Lawrence County)—While the war raged, New Castle grew and prospered. The pottery industry began and flourished, and the Bank of New Castle organized as the National Bank of Lawrence County. Soon after the war limestone quarrying became an important enterprise and its prosperity helped the area grow until in 1870 New Castle became a city with a population in excess of 6,000. No one is useless in the world who lightens the burden of it for anyone else. Charles Dickens 6 In THE NEWS—After numerous attempts to compromise the economic differences between North and South fail, Civil War erupts as Southern States seek to secede from the Union. The effort though unsuccessful, indelibly marks the mind of the nation. The political turmoil of the reconstruction, causes the Senate to try to impeach Andrew Johnson but they narrowly fail. Eli Whitney, develops first assembly line production process, revolutionizing the American economy. 7 I find (he great thing in this world is not so IN THE NEWS (Lawrence County)—New Castle followed the national trends toward prosperity and industrialization. Two iron works, a cement works and a machine shop began operations and the community flourished. The increased size and wealth of the city brought about the construction of a new and modern city hall, and the opening of the city water company. And to improve the quality of education in the city; NEW CASTLE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL opened its doors to students for the first time in 1876. much where we stand as in what direction we are moving. Oliver Wendell Holmes 6 IN THE NEWS—American Post-war recovery was swift and soon the westward migration returned with even more vigor than before. During this time, the wars with the western Indians resulted in their subjugation. American wealth, land and freedom; lured the first of many waves of European immigrants to the United States. These new Americans fed the needs of the factories as America went through its industrial revolution. And organized labor appeared as a strong force in the Nation. 9 IN THE NEWS (Lawrence County)—During this time New Castle reached its peak with the establishment of two steel mills and some of the world’s largest tin plate mills. Numerous mills, factories, and plants of all manner were set up in Lawrence County and vicinity and the resulting influx of people caused the city to swell to almost 30,000. Among the pitfalls on our way. The best of us walk blindly; So, man, be wary, watch, and pray. And judge your brother kindly. Alice Cary 10 IN THE NEWS—The United States of America embarked upon its second century in relative peace and calm. The late nineteenth century was one of expansion and consolidation and was marred only by the brief Spanish-American War. For the first time America divorced herself from Europe and European pursuits and began more typically American modes of entertainment such as Baseball. II IN THE NEWS (LAWRENCE COUNTY)—In 1913 New Castle was devastated by the most disastrous flood in its history. The first Public Library was built and the highway system in the area was completely revamped. Throughout the war and most of the twenties the energies and resources and of the community were almost exclusively devoted to rebuilding what had been destroyed in the 1913 flood. A man should never be ashamed to say he has been wrong which is but saying in other words that he is wiser today than he was yesterday Alexander Pope 12 IN THE NEWS—The first decades of the twentieth century saw America convulsed with change. The horror of the First World War, (the war that unfortunately did not “end all the war”) gave way to the post-war slump and finally the boom years of the twenties. Americans lived high in these properous and decadent times when many felt the United States was morally bankrupt and wondered where it would all end. It all ended on Wall Street with the great crash of ’29. 13 IN THE NEWS (Lawrence County)—The community suffered greatly during the depression, but public work projects initiated at this time proved to be of lasting worth. In the forties, throughout the war and post-year periods, New Castle’s prosperity failed to regain it’s pre-depression vigor and as a result the city’s population leveled off at below peak levels. The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Las-Tsze 14 IN THE NEWS—The United States suffered through the depression until the New Deal and the impending war cured the ailing economy. During the war years America assumed the position of world leader which she maintained in the post war years. The UN, cold war, and Korea, and Vietnam “highlighted” the years following the war. But this external turmoil was accompanied by internal strife of assasina-tion, riots, political corruption, and public apathy. 15 IN THE NEWS (Lawrence County)—New Castle Senior High School celebrates its centennial. Ne-Ca-Hi wins its 10th WPIAL crown in Football. The county expands its road net around the city. Basketball team wins its proper popular recognition for the first time in over a decade. Movies are the main form of entertainment, notably, Jaws, Dog Day Afternoon, and Young Frankenstein. Be not simply good—be good for something. Henry Thoreau 16 IN THE NEWS—The Nation prepares for an election year, with President Ford Facing 11 Democratic and several Republican challengers. Angola. The CIA, FBI, AFL, CIO, OASN, NATO, SEATO, YOU. Zionism racism resolution creates furor throughout the country. Steelers win Super Bowl X. The recession comes to an end? Two assasination attempts are made on President Ford. Patty Hearst is found.
