The Senior Class Of New Castle High School New Castle Pennsylvania Presents The 1959 Ne-Ca-Hi Foreword As the seasons change the world of nature, so do they change our lives. In the Fall the animals scamper around to store food for the winter. At this time of year, we return to school to store knowledge that will last a lifetime. In the Winter the world of nature seems motionless. We, however, are anything but still. We go about everything— studying, activities, sports, and dating— with a new vigor. As Spring arrives the earth is reawakened. Buds and blossoms burst into being once more. Now we find that we, too, are awakened as our lives burst forth. Graduation, like Spring, brings a new outlook to our lives. May this book serve as a reminder of Ne-Ca-Hi as we look back on our friends and activities through the Fall, Winter, and Spring of 1959. 4 '’ ’■■•I.,,, ' .u etl«ors s-.r ' h tl, I| C|U. Schlumberger who was our friend as well as our advisor throughout our three years at Ne-Ca-Hi. He was always a patient and wise guide and an understanding counselor. He sympathized with us in our troubles, rejoiced in our achievements, and backed us in our many ventures. To him we owe much of our success as a class. Our deepest thanks to you, Mr. Schlumberger, senior class advisor, 1959. 6 Highlights of the School Year 1958-1959 Winter 7 The Senior Game—we bid a fond farewell to the football season. We are the people whom younger ones must depend on. We are the citizens of tomorrow. Before we leave school, though, let’s think back to the many wonderful and exciting experiences we shared with each other. September September is a month of “firsts.” The first day of school, the first pep meeting, the first football game, and the first cross country meet. The biggest “first,” though, was that it was the first month of our senior year. October Homecoming was the outstanding event of this autumn month. Our queen was Patty Lock-ley. She represented us at the parade, football game, and at the highlight of the week, the I Iomecoming Dance. November The Senior Play, “Kind Lady” kept a suspenseful audience in its grip as it weaved a wonderful mystery. The Pep Club dinner and dance paid homage to the many athletes of Ne-Ca-Hi, and what a delicious turkey dinner we had in the cafeteria for our Thanksgiving meal. December Can anyone ever forget the turmoil of evaluation? Visiting teachers paraded in and out of rooms at all times of the day. But, even after the inconvenience, we were proud of Ne-Ca-Hi’s rating. The first few basketball games gave us an inclination of forthcoming victories. The large Christmas tree at the Senior Dance proved to be equal to Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree in New York as far as the “Lions” were concerned. January Grunts and groans from wrestling fans became common sounds. Our third report card hinted that we’d better study if we wanted to wear a tassled cap. February The “Diary of Anne Frank” amazed the city of New Castle. This Broadway hit turned out to be the biggest play in the last twelve years at Ne-Ca-Hi. A complete sell-out crowd proved that teenagers can work on something serious and make it a success. March Oh, how we laughed at our faculty basketball game. The men teachers seemed to play in earnest but somehow lost to the junior high faculty. April Preparations for the all-night party were in full swing with our parents being the masterminds behind it all. “Kissin’ Cousin,” the Student Council play, kept us in stitches. The juniors excited us with their plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. May With the Senior Class well represented, the dance was a huge success. What a thrilling sensation to receive our cap and gown. Baccalaureate was very moving and seemed a fitting end to our twelve years. Class Day and the picnic, although fun, brought tears to our eyes. June Dinner Dance and Commencement. The two happiest and yet saddest occasions of our senior year. Adjectives can’t be found to describe these two events. It’s all over, and we have now entered the world as adults. F.ven though we’re leaving, we can think how these memorable experiences will enrich our future. 30 Mr. Schlumberger and the Senior Class Officers STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS 31 Left to right: Bill Mooney, John Bertucci, Joe Valentino, Jane Weingartner. Wrestling teams and basketball. English, health, and U. S. History, Language clubs and record hops, Chemistry and economics, Ne-Ca-Hi you’re always tops. May our hard times be forgotten, This our graduation year, May old acquaintance be remembered, And these memories so dear. So as we leave our Alma Mater, May our wildest dreams come true, And this song, dear Ne-Ca-Hi, We dedicate to you. by Gayle Domke Patty Lockley Bonnie Wyman GOODBY NE-CA-HI Class Poem Goodby Ne-Ca-Hi, we begin life anew, With the wisdom we have gained to see us through. We leave with memories that are so dear. Some with a smile, others with a tear. Goodby Ne-Ca-Hi, well never forget. The fun we’ve had or the friends we’ve met. The signs in the hall, the meetings we attended. We’re sorry now that it has to be ended. Goodby Ne-Ca-Hi, from you we must part; Our class will remember you deep in its heart. For all it’s the beginning of a new career, A life of our own that began right here. Goodby Ne-Ca-Hi, the years have been few. Since we were sophomores, and all was so new. But somehow that year did finally pass. And we found ourselves in the junior class. Goodby Ne-Ca-Hi, was just a thought. For in our junior year, it was knowledge we sought. Knowing the next year would be our last. We tried very hard and the year went fast. Goodby Ne-Ca-Hi, it’s our senior year. The time has come to wish us good cheer. You’ve done your part, now it’s our turn to try. From the Class of ’59—Goodby Ne-Ca-Hi. by Lynn Spencer, Mark Slovonsky 78 Honor Roll 1. Mario James Acquillo 2. Sandra Lee Bame 3. A new coach, fairly new team, and spanking-new senior class greeted the 1958 football season. William Ciccone, the new coach (recruited from nearby Bessemer), was excited about his team, hoping the season would be victorious. “The Star Spangled Banner,” pom-poms, pizza, pop, popcorn, cheerleaders, huddle, and finally the kickoff built the crowd to an exciting climax of anticipation. What followed were three glorious winnings for the Hurricanes, and three losses. But, our boys didn’t fail us completely, for they returned in the final weeks of games to offer the crowds some non-stop moments of joy. Although the record isn’t exactly what we hoped it would be, next season promises to give some fast-pace football. Too bad we seniors won’t be here to see it all. Row I: James Williamson, Mike Stone, Bob Ayres, Eddie DeCarbo. Row II: Anthony Roscetti, Stuart Ruehle, George Arnold. 117 Fight, team, fight! This was the cry that was heard each Friday night. The Junior Varsity cheerleaders are comprised of six juniors. They cheer at the football and Junior Varsity basketball home games. Miss Noncff is their sponsor. Our mascot, “The Lion” will be remembered as the constant companion to the cheerleaders during the entire football season. 119 Kneeling: B. Byler, J. Cangey, B. Patterson. Standing: T. Alexander, H. Croston, B. Mooney, M. Dennis, H. Toscano, J. Riggans, P. Williams. This year our basketball team finished a spectacular season filled of excitement. The team wound up the season in second place of section 3. The 16-7 record shows that our boys were willing to fight. Each game kept the crowds on their feet and the players busy. Bobby Byler, a junior, provided some of the most memorable plays of the season, and next year he promises to be even better; but one player doesn’t make a winning team. It takes a team that works together, a coach willing to work with them, and school spirit. We seniors are proud to know that we were the backbone of school spirit that helped make our boys victorious. One of the most exciting sport spectacles in America is track. Definitely the oldest sport and the one that has survived the centuries, track was first introduced by the Greeks in the Olympian games. Today track is gaining more and better fans at Ne-Ca-Hi than ever before. No longer are football and basketball the only sports the students and townspeople are interested in. This year an exciting schedule has been set up, in fact, Mr. Cowmeadow states it is the best in the history of Ne-Ca-Hi. So we look forward to another exciting season and maybe we’ll produce another Walt Mangam or Paul Sanders. This year, many injuries at the beginning of the year brought unhappiness to our Cross Country Team and to its coach, Mr. Malarkey. However, through the injuries there were still many good showings at the meets. The 2-4 record shows what the injuries did. loot’s hope for something better next year.
