ON SPORTS ATHLETICS ARE MORE THAN JUST GAMES AMERICANS WHO REALLY KNOW AND AP PRECIATE ATHLETICS REALIZE THAT THEY ARE A VITAL FORCE AFFECTING THE LIVES OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE AS WELL AS THE STRENGTH OF OUR NATION ATHLETICS EN COURAGE AND DEVELOP ALL THAT IS FINEST IN CHARACTER THEY BREED COURAGE AND ESTABLISH PRINCIPLES OF SPORTSMANSHIP AND FAIR PLAY THEY PLACE EMPHASIS ON STAMINA AND SPIRIT ABOVE ALL THEY PROMOTE RESPECT FOR LOYALTY AND TEAM WORK WHICH REMAINS WITH THE ATHLETE HAS BROUGHT ABOUT AN APPARENT CRUM BLING OF MANY IDEALS THAT MAKE LIFE WORTH LIVING NOW MORE THAN EVER BEFORE IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE MINDS OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE BE OCCUPIED WITH WHOLESOME CONSTRUCTIVE IDEALS WHERE BETTER CAN CHARACTER BE DEVEL OPED LESSONS IN INTEGRITY LOYALTY AND FAIR PLAY BE LEARNED THAN ON THE PRAC TICE AND PLAYING FIELDS OF ATHLETICS? CHEERLEADING Captained by Judy Pickering, the ten regular and two substitute cheerleaders vig- orously cheered us through this year's foot- ball and basketball season. Under the super- vision of Miss Murphy and Miss Hereford, they lumped, stamped, and shouted until they were hoarse. Practice sessions were held each day during the football season and twice a week during the basketball season. The supple ac- robats were chosen by first trying out before Miss Murphy and the cheerleaders from the previous year, and then before a body of teachers, who made the final eliminations.
