BAND In his second year at New Canaan, Mr. Dougherty worked long and hard to increase both the quality and prestige of the band. The instrumentation was wide and carefully planned, and the band developed its awareness of musical detail. Mr. Dougherty's tire- less work produced a high level of performance never before heard in a New Canaan band. This year the band was heard at football games, assemblies, the spring concert, and at the tri-team festival. Last tall the dance band, organized by Dick Perry and sponsored by Mr. Dougherty, began its meteoric rise to fame. The key to its success was a lively bounce and a sweet and smooth tone.
