BAND In his second year at New Canaan, Mr. Dougherty worked long and hard to increase both the quality and prestige of the band. The instrumentation was wide and carefully planned, and the band developed its awareness of musical detail. Mr. Dougherty's tire- less work produced a high level of performance never before heard in a New Canaan band. This year the band was heard at football games, assemblies, the spring concert, and at the tri-team festival. Last tall the dance band, organized by Dick Perry and sponsored by Mr. Dougherty, began its meteoric rise to fame. The key to its success was a lively bounce and a sweet and smooth tone. Exulting with Christianson, exhorting with Bee- thoven, and springing high with Edward Grieg, the choraleers found excitement and beauty in eight- part music. The season began with a bong as the 110 members traveled to Boston to perform before the New England Association of School Superin- tendents. The annual December concert, under the watchful eye of a suspended angel, communicated to the audience the real feeling of Christmas. The group braved February ice and slush to ioin in the dedication of the new post office. When blues and greens could be seen through the open-door of the practice room, they rehearsed music for the spring concert. The underclassmen in the group are un- daunted by the fact that the large group of seniors will be leaving, for the gap will soon be filled.
