THE COURANT Throughout the year, hustling, bustling Kay Killingsworth and her eager stat? kept up the re- porting, news-writing, and feature research neces- sary to make the paper bigger and better than ever. The staff tried to print six pages as often as possible while filling the paper with the customarily excellent news coverage, amusing features, and occasional glimpses of the outside world. The retirement in January of their advisor, Mrs. Marsland, shocked the staff, but the members car- ried on, and her sense of accurate and complete news coverage still reigns in the oftice. With the encouragement of Mrs. White, the new advisor, The Courant continued to increase student awareness. This year The Courant also trained a News Bureau, made up of beginning journalists, to cover news for the school page of The Advertiser. Mr. Fabry's painters and sketchers have been joined by the sculp- tors under Mr. Jacobson and this year by the interesting de- sign course under Mrs. Hall. The whole department was iumping up and down for weeks after the moulding, sketching, and snipping artists of NCHS walked off with 15 gold keys and 'I6 place certifi- cates in the 1959 Scholastic Art Award Contest. Deane Lawrence and Pam Chatter- ton, with 4 and 9 gold keys respectively, are eligible for art scholarships.
