With nineteen full-time teachers, the English Depart- ment is the largest in New Brunswick High School, in- volving all the students enrolled. All English courses stress the importance of the communication skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The curriculum emphasizes the responsibilities which freedom of speech and of the press place upon the individual, in an attempt to train the student to make thoughtful and critical use of the mass media of commu- nication. Teachers continually correlate the appreciation of life situations in literature with those of the student's daily existence. ln our ever-changing society, the ultimate goal of the English Department is to aid the student to develop himself to the highest level of his potential in order that he may lead a socially useful and personally satisfying life.
