NENV BRIGHTON vs. ELLXYOOD CITY The Lions under their new head coach. Sam Wlilson. opened the 1958 football season with the Wolverines of Ellwood City. Though they were not very impressive in the first half. the Lions came storming back to put, on a fine performance of hard fought football in the second half. Due to lack of experience with the newly adopted T formation. the Lions. unable to score. were edged out U-fi with Ellwood's tally coming as a result of Dyson's blocked punt. NEW' BRIGHTON vs. HOPENYELL The fine passing of NIike Hornick proved profitable for New Brighton. I-Ie found his receiver. .lim Hill. clear of Viking men and threw thirty yards for a touchdown. By the score of 6-0. Brigh- ton kept a perfect record of never having been defeated by Hopewell. NEXV BRIGHTON vs. FREEDOM The New Brighton Lions walked over the Freedom Bulldogs by the score of 20-7. Freedom took a 7-U lead in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter. the Lions marched seventy-nine yards with Dyson finally plunging over the center for the touchdown. Nlissing the P.A.T.. the score remained 7-6 at halftime. The Lions scored once again in the third quarter for Dyson's second T. D. Jim Ashton then booted the P.A.T. Still not satisfied. Nlike Hornick led the Brighton men for another touchdown in the fourth period. Again Ashton kicked the P.A.T. to terminate the game. NICXY BRIGHTON vs. BOCHICSTIER Bill Beighevs interception of a handoff in the Bam's backfield. followed by forty yards of broken field running. was the difference of a 6-0 Lions' victory over the Rochester Barns. Always a hard played contest. both teams played heads-up ball all through the game. The Bains did not threaten to score after the I.ions' T.D. NICNY BRIGHTON vs. BIQAVICB New Brighton faced defeat at the hands of the Beaver Bobcats by a decisive tt-26. thereby being eliminated from the YY.P.I.A.L. Class A Competition. Beaver could do no wrong and the I.ions could do no right. Fumbles by the Lion backfield proved disastrous. Brighton men lost six fumbles upon which the Bobcats were quick to capitalize. NEW' BRIGHTON vs. CANONSBVBG The Gunners of Canonsburg fought the Lions to a tl-6 decision. rlfllls was the fourth time the Brighton men were involved in such a score, having previously lost one and won two by the same margin. The Gunners united in the last minutes of the game to score. Ed Howard blocked the kick. but the clock did not allow time for a New Brighton tally. l47l ardziy gooibalf NI W BBIC HTON x BBADDCX Is.
