Accumulating facts from a textbook, acquiring a skill through repeat practice, learning a trade with help of an instructor - these roads to intel- lectual growth we encounter in school. However, before we can use these things to work in the world, we must learn to live in it. At home and our recreational activities we are constantly learning to improve our social and personal relationships. Books are available to the students to enrich their knowledge not only of the subject matter taught, but a storehouse of information on various phases of society. The library also contains filmstrips, records, tapes and transparencies for the teachers to use in enriching their programs. Thus the library serves both students and teachers. MRS. NAN LONGING Librarian NBHS Band Creates Much Interest The band added to the football games and also created more interest than any other year. The band enjoyed the popularity acclaimed it by winning more honors, medals and its participation in community affairs. Every student has the opportunity to learn about and appreciate the finer cultural things in their society. Speech .,. Speech classes familiarize students with the proper methods of debate prose interpretation, and poetry interpretation. In order to address the public in varied situations, die student must first gain self confidence through practice and research. The math department of New Boston High School provides the ways to enrich the mind about math, algebra, and geometry, and for those who want to continue the enrichment of the broader forms of mathmatics. Knowledge and skills are part of the intellectual equipment of the educated mind. History provides one of the best opportunities for students to practice and gain increasing mastery of these essential intellectual tools. Understanding of the past can make the present intelligible. VINSON Counselor OTTIS FOX Vocational Counselor ROY CAGLE ICT The Counseling Department gives achievement and aptitude tests and interprets these to the students. Information concerning colleges, universities, and careers are provided, especially with senior students in mind. The Industrial Cooperative Training is a cooperative effort between the school and industry to train our in-school youth, for gainful employment in a skilled occupation. The Co-ordinated Vocational-Academic Education has two units: one for girls and one for boys. The students spend two hours each day in a shop or work laboratory. The boys are taught skills in the general construction trades of carpentry, electricity, plumbing, painting, cement finishing and masonry. The girls receive training in the homemaking related field of Home and Community Services. This year the Distributive Education and the Mechanical Repair Shop was begun. In D E students train on the job for one half day in the areas of selling, marketing and distribution. In the lab phase of D E the students learn the areas of selling, marketing, and distribution in the classroom. The program also includes experience programs, fairs, exhibits, and contests. MARY JO LEWIS Homemaking; Consumer Education Agriculture Keep Pace With The Times Preparing a girl for her role as a wife, mother, and homemaker, homemaking provided many opportunities for experience. A complex subject, it was divided into clothing, good grooming, personality, manners, food, buying, and interior decorating.
