R. B1RDWELL Vice-President Led by the members of the Board of Education and Ad- ministration, all schools made many significant advances in teaching and curriculum fa- cilities. The youth of the city would be deprived of the edu- cational opportunities offered today if we did not have the help of these persons. Through their industrious activities, the policies of the school board are ably carried out. Our thanks go to these men for their time devoted to our progress. EUGENE PETERSON WELDON McCORD TIP F. We are very proud of our band for winning Sweepstakes in the UIL contests. This year the library offered many new books as well as a revised card catalog for use by the students. Library workers were in charge of checking the books in and out. Sophomores Punching Holes. 10 VELMA VINSON Senior English SAM DICKENS Sophomore English i LINDA KING Junior English English Department Adds to Our Culture Every student in New Boston High School has presented to him the opportunity to learn apprecia- tion of the finer and cultural things of life. The grammar phase of English provided the necessary background and knowledge which all our subjects thrive on. MRS. SYBIL LUTZ - Language and Speech Department. Spanish helps students become acquainted with, and to develop an appreciation for the Latin American people as a means of developing American solidarity. A knowledge of the Spanish language and its background is also provided as a key to belter understanding of Spanish and La tin -American culture. Speech classes acquaint the student with the proper methods used in debate, prose interpreta- tion and poetry interpretation. The student also gains confidence as he learns how to address the public in many varied situations. 11 Math Department THOMAS HAWKINS - Plane Geometry Physics Trig. MARI KAY HAWKINS - General Math and Algebra The Math Department of New Boston High School tried to formulate a correct understand- ing as to the meaning of fractions, and to teach the students to gain a basic understand- ing of methods to coordinate geometry and thus recognize the way in which algebra and geometry complement each other. 12 Science Department Discovers — JOHN DEMPSEY - Chemistry Biology MILTON MINTER - Biology The Science Department provided one means of following the paths of discovery which so many students seek. Though many do not arrive at their chosen des- tination, they broaden their perspective to a range which allows them to progress even further in their search for the unknown, it tried to formulate a cor- rect understanding as to the meaning in physics of the term matter and to initiate the study of its properties, such as mass, weight, and inertia, and to acquaint the student with some of the technical pieces of appa- ratus in the electrical area so that he might use his skills in maintaining these pieces of equipment. T3 The Social Science Department Keeps Apace With the Times American History is presented so that the study of our nations' heritage is as vital, chai- lenging, and effective as possible. Knowledge and skills are part of the intellectual equipment of the educated mind. History provides one of the best opportunities for students to practice and gain increasing mastery of these essential intel- lectual tools. Understanding of the past can make the present intelligible. Students will seek in the history of their country a background which can be relevant to America today. Civics classes gave the students the opportunity to become acquainted with their government and its backbone - the constitution. Current events helped them to keep abreast of what’s happening in today's world. JUANELL CAGLE - A. History JAMES WESTFALL - Civics WAYLON BUCHANAN - W. Our last year of high school has been very exciting as we prepare to leave the halls of NBHS. Taking our college board tests, washing cars, improving grades for exemption, being measured for caps and gowns, and choosing a college or career are just a few of the problems that faced the class of '71. As a class, we assumed our positions of leadership in school and in various organizations. As the last week of school began, we knew that graduation was just around the corner. We realized that trodding the halls of NBHS for the last time was a sad yet happy event. The climax of our school year reached where we met on stage to receive our diplomas. 20 « JERE PAUL ADDINGTON Ftball 2, 3, 4; TALA 2, 4; Speech Club 3; Spanish Club Off. 3, 4; Class Off. 2t 4; Class Favorite 2, 4; Student Coun- cil Off. 4; Roar Staff 4; Annual Staff; Sr. Play.
