ZEAL + LABOR = PROGRESS Look up and not down; look forward and not backward; look out and not in, and lend a hand. E. E. Hale LOOK UP I Long have we looked up and realized what our school could be; therefore, we can see what it is today. We have come a long way, what with the ZEAL to accomplish the best and the extra labor added to reach the highest. We will continue to strive to be even better. LOOK FORWARD 1 Each year brings new and bigger challenges. We labor on; we form new organizations; we make use of modern aids to learning; we branch out in athletics and interscholastic league to meet new com- petition. We have the Zeal to expand, and we are willing to put forth every effort to make our school a better one. LOOK OUT! We watch for changes, readily dis- carding old and outmoded for the new and more ef- ficient. We led the way in integration. The adjustment of OUR students in New Boston High School was re- markable, as it is when ALL use the Zeal to lead and exercise the efforts to make our school ONE. LEND A HAND! We are hereto dedicating ourselves to progress. We catch the zealousness of all in adjust- ing ourselves and our facilities to meet the demands of Progress by helping at every opportunity. The 1967 PINE CONE moves with New Boston High-- making more Progress by the Zeal and Labor of our stu- dents and administration. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS Activities Administration Sophomores Juniors Seniors Favorites Athletics Organizations Junior High Elementary Crestview Advertisers First Meal CONFUSION! That title certainly sounded more dignified than freshmen But along with the privileges that our new status brought came many more responsibilities. Due to the school system change we found we were still the low class at NBHS. How- ever, we quickly proved our merit by placing several players on the varsity football and basketball teams and by achieving high scholastic marks. 37 AUTHORITY COMES SLOWLY TO SOPHOMORES James Allen Gwendolyn Alley Michael Amason Danny Anderson Jimmy Anderson Deborah Atchley William Austin Coye Barber Raye Barber Mont Barling James Basso David Beasley Joseph Bolger Erving Briggs Mary Briggs Terry Brown Homer Burns Waller Campbell Johnnie Cole Sandra Coleman Duane Combs Kathy Cooper Jean Davis Sandra Davis Linda Dixon Patricia Duke Cynthia Elliott LaHonda Ellis Francine Ellis Billy England Richard England Jean Forte Sharolyn Fowler Susan Geist Bobby Gladney 38 THE LARGEST CLASS EVER - 129 STRONG Jerry Gladney Margaret Glover Michel Gortney Judy Green Sharon Green Cornelius Griffin Ronnie Griffith Rhonda Harmon Gilbert Haywood Ray Nell Hilton Linda Hodge Jean House Charlotte House Harvey House Paul Hutchens Robinette Hutchinson Sheila Jarrett William Jennings Larry Johnson Patricia Johnson Sharon Johnson David Jolly David Jones Judy Jones Ann Jordan Lonnie Kelley Sally Kelly Alvin Landers James Lawrence Patricia Leslie Timothy Lutes Glenda Lyle Earl Gene Marshall Janie May Martha Mahone Paul NicC la ran Raymond McClung Danny McCright Betty Me El wee Sarah McGill Edward Misenhelter Billy Morris Jane Morris Michael Myers Richard Oglesby Wilma Paschen Billy Pasley Thelma Phillips Diane Pommer Betty Pool Janet Pool Paul Porter Harold Powell Danny Rackley Elizabeth Rackley Lonnie Raney Willaim Ratcliff Mary Richard Darnell Riley Merle Ross Oneai Runnels Ricky Runnels Thomas Russell Peggy Saatkamp Wayne Sanders Steven Schuler Judy Shelton Jimmy Skinner Eileen Smithson Reta Smithson 40 SOPHOMORES BIG HELP IN BALL BAND James Stewart Richard Stieb Scott Stone David Strong Robert Sturtevant Curtis Terrell Robert Terrell Judy Tidwell Brenda Tun Mike Wade Eddie Mae Wade Frank Wallace Katherine Warren Kathy Warren Brenda Westbrook patricia Wilkinson James Wills Thomas Wilson George Wisdom Kenneth Wisdom Charlene Yates Daphene Yates Jerry Yates Gary Youngblood Speeches at NBHS Very Important Discussion? 41 JUNIORS JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT - MIKE WILSON PARLIAMENTARIAN - ANN MULLINS VICE-PRESIDENT - SUSIE MARTIN HISTORIAN - TOMMY BROWN SECRETARY SHEILA THOMPSON TREASURER - NANCY CRAWFORD Juniors! With two years of high school behind us and two before us, we wonder where all the time has gone and whether we will ever graduate. During this year, we have had many worthwhile projects, such as cleaning the football field after each home game. We really didn’t mind such things as this because we knew that in the spring we would have the Junior-Senior Banquet. Although each and every one of us had his problems this year, we feel that our class has much to be proud of and are especially proud that we can call ourselves Juniors. 1966-67 JUNIORS LARGEST ENROLLMENT Michael Anderson Mingo Bagby Kenneth Barthel Donnie Bookout Kay Bra ley Thomas Brown Suzette Browning Michael Butler Linda Corley Glenda Cockrell William Combs Jackie Cowley Helen Craig Nancy Crawford Mack Easley Mary Easterling Alonzo Ellis Billy Ellis Barbara Eubank Marilyn Fowler Janice Garrett James Gholston Florence Gladney Portia Goodman Wanda Goodmon Sharon Haggard David Hanna Judy Harp Jesse Harris John Henderson 44 JUNIORS LEAD IN STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS Shirley Henderson Lois Herrold Donna Hobbs Thomas Johnson Debbie Jones Herman Jones Jane Jones Michael Jones Thomas King Hoyt Kingston Gregory La tier James Letcher Joe Earl Lewis Linda Lynch Bobby Martin Susan Martin Carolyn McClaran Marsha McElwee Jackie McPherson Billy Miller Harold Miller Maria Mitchell Wendell Morton Ann Mullins Horace Murdock Linda Oglesby Pamela Oliver Steve Olson Eddie Ray Perry Rachel Phillips 45 Judy Phipps Albert Pierce Ronnie Ponder Buell Powell Sammy Raney Larry Ratcliff Barbara Reed Brenda Rich Barbara Roberts Donald Robertson Charles Rose Jerry Runnels Charlotte Russell Ronald Sanford Bonnie Schiffner Homer Smallwood Larry Starnes Ronnie Steelman Melvin Stewart Linda Stieb Waymon Strickland Molly Stinson William Sturtevant John Thom Nancy Thomason Sheila Thompson Ronnie Vigil Bruce Vinson Laura Wagner Mark Warthan MAY BRINGS JUNIORS GOAL - SENIORSHIP Hoyt Whittle Ricky Williams Robert Wills Danny Wilson Michael Wilson Alfred Wortham TennelJ Wright Myra York 47 SENIORS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT - RICHARD WILSON SECRETARY - LOUANN WATTS HISTORIAN - BARBARA FISHER VICE-PRESIDENT - EDDIE HOPKINS TREASURER - GERALD BREWER REPORTER - PAUL THOMPSON EVEN THOUGH WE’RE NOT FROM HEAVEN! SENIOR CLASS OF '67 Mrs. Pirkey gave us this yell at the first pep rally in our Freshman year- It carried u$ through the tortures of our Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years, and finally ended as the Seniors of 67 prepared to leave the portals of New Boston High School for the last time- The Seniors of 67 feel that we should leave record of our deeds as an example for those who will follow us- It is our sincerest wish that the future classes of New Boston High School will be able to equal and better these records which we proudly set forward. Football season brought us four Senior Captains Gordon Graham, Pat Richard, Trevor Forrestor, and David Russell; a Senior Football Sweetheart, Kay Parker; and a District Hon. Mention Football player. Pat Richard. During our Junior years Eddie Hopkins and Richard Wilson helped push the Lions to a 30-4 rec- ord in basketball, the best in New Boston history. Eddie Hopkins made A11-District in his Junior year and Honorable Mention in his Senior year. Gary Schiffner made All-District during his Senior year. We are also proud of the fact that we were the largest graduating Class in New Boston history. We were also responsible for the beginning of the Student Council in New Boston High. All in all it has been a great four years for the SENIOR CLASS OF 67. The 1965-66 team fashioned a 30-4 season record and this was a tough act to follow. Al- though the Lions could not manage another 30-4 season, they did fashion a fine 18-9 season record. In pre-district play the Lions attained a 11-6 record. In the Texarkana Tournament the Lions fell to the Maud Cardinals, the eventual tournament winners, after a hard fought game 64-67. The Lions took a consolation trophy in die Daingerfield Tournament and also brought home a second place trophy from the DeKalb Tournament. In district play the Lions ended competition with a 7-3 record, good for second place in the dis- trict. Two seniors, Eddie Hopkins and Richard Wilson, closed out three years of varsity ball with the combined season record for the three years at an outstanding 65-28. The otfier two seniors, Tom Schu- ler and Gary Schiffner closed out one year of B Team ball and one of varsity with a record of 38-10. New Boston placed Gary Schiffner and Mike Wilson on the All-District team. Eddie Hopkins made Honorable Mention All-District. This is a national organization made up by students training to become techni- cians and craftsmen in industry. The club provides leadership training for its mem- bers, through district and state competition. The progress of America's business will depend on well-trained employees - and New Boston High ICT students will not be behind in the forward march. They have contributed much to the school spirit, and have made much progress in their field. They won First Division in the Marching Contest and are looking forward to having a Sweepstake Band this year. They won 40 medals at the Solo and Ensemble Contest at Commerce. With Mr. Goffs push and the band's willing to go, they have been enthusiastic in the Pep Rallys. The Band won first place at Stephen F. Austin State College's Homecoming Parade. 95 NEW BOSTON BAND NEW BOSTON BAND OFFICERS PRESIDENT--KEA ALFORD VICE-PRESIDENT--MARK WORTHAN SEC RET ARY-TREA SURER--LOUANN WATTS REPORTER--JANE HARBOR LIBRA R1A N S - - BREN DA RANEY, VIRGINIA LIMPUS DRUM MAJOR--GERALD BREWER BAND HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL The 1966-67 Band Carnival proved to be a huge success The reigning King and Queen of 1966, Miss Susan Simpson and Mr. David Jones, gave up their throne to the now reigning King and Queen of 1967 Pam Sharp and Jimmy Howell. The yearly band carnival provides for the needs of the Mew Boston Lion Band. The money is used for instruments, uniforms, and trips. The Band appreciates the hard work of all the people that make this event possible. Incidentally Mrs. Braswell's room has the honor of having won the race for the past two years. R. B. TURNER Principal This was the first year for New Boston to have a junior high school. The schools were fully inte- grated and the Negro school was converted into New Boston Junior High. Mr. R. B, Turner, princi- pal of the school, and his staff have really worked this year. The football boys made a very good record, and the basketball boys gained fame by refus- ing to let any team defeat them. The P. E. Classes were organized, and the ninth grade English students printed their first newspaper The Whimper. The school has a central library and a full-time librarian. So with PUSH THE NEW BOS- TON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL HAS CERTAINLY MADE PROGRESS ITS FIRST YEAR. EDITH MOSELY - Counselor JOYCE HOSMAN - Librarian ALICE COLEMAN - H. Ed PE JOHNNIE H. The Cubs, Coached by Kenneth Mills, captured the District 13-AA Champion- ship, and became the first New Boston basketball team to go undefeated through an entire season. In addition to winning the District trophy, the Cubs also won first place trophies at the Liberty-Eylau and Paul Pewitt Jr. High Tournaments. The Cubs had a habit of outclassing their opponents. Only three games were won by the Cubs with less than a ten point margin. Their most impressive wins were a 77-30 trouncing of F. Ben Pierce of Texarkana in the finals of the Liberty-Eylau Tournament and a 77-41 massacre of Linden-Kildare in a district game. Team members who started were Mark Rowe, Tommy McGee, Gretchen Powell, Oma Alford, and Billy Price.
