CREED I believe in the future of Farming, with a faith bom not of words but of deedi - achievements won by the present and past generation of Farmer ; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come up to us from the struggles of former years. I believe that to live and work on a good farm is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of farm life and hold an inborn fondness for those asso- ciations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of organized farmers to serve our own and the public interest in marketing the product of our toil. I believe we can safeguard those rights against practices and policies that are unfair, I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in the abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so--for others as well as myself; in Less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon me. 1 believe that rural America can and will hold true to the best traditions in our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task. ■ V School Cheerleader NANCY HAMMONDS Sophomore Cheerleader WANDA SHELTON Senior Cheerleader SHARON COLEMAN Junior Cheerleader MELDA COLLOM Freshman Cheerleader BARBARA KELLY n fbw PEP SQUAD OFFICERS President - - - - Vice President - PAT OWEN Secretary-Treasurer - - DIANNE SHELTON Rosalie Russell Dorothy Cowley CAPTAINS Pat Longino Pat Lane Sylvia Shelton NEW BOSTON LION BAND STEVE HEUBERGER, Director As a representative of this school and this community, the Lion Band has, since its organiza- tion, and especially in die last five years, projected to the people of a great surrounding area a correct picture of the fine academic atmosphere of New Boston High School and the high interest of the city in the cultural and moral advancement of its youth. The superior musical ability of the organization is attested by its excellent record in numerous contests and festivals sponsored by the University Interscholastic League. In each of the past five years, the Marching Band has been rated in the 1st Division of regional marching bands; in each of the last four years, the Concert Band has been rated in the 1st Division of regional and concert bands. These accomplishments have certainly justified the title of Sweepstakes Band. M Numerous awards for the whole band is not an indication of the absence of any development of musical talent on the individual level, however. From the music curriculum of the school have come consistent All- State Band members, All-Region Band members, Solo and Ensemble Contest winners (In 1959, 52 competitors set an official regional record for copping 74 1st Division awards.), and students who plan to enter into a musical profession. The conduct of the bandsmen on annual spring trips, such as the trip to the Cotton Carnival in Memphis, Tennessee, has been complimented by those with whom they have come into contact and deemed beyond reproach by sponsors and chaperones of the Band Boosters' Club. Under the direction of Mr. Steve Heuberger, a graduate of East Texas State College, the musical department is being strengthened by new ideas and the most recent pedagogical con- cepts. Indicative of this constant vigil to maintain proper instruction, the band was awarded in October, I960, a position of runner-up in the state's many AA concert bands for the second con- secutive year of judging in this class. Surely the success of the group lies in the fact that not only does it strive for improvement of musical ability, but for the improvement of the represen- tation of New Boston and the improvement of character as well. In pre-seasonal play the Lions attained a record of 15-2. In addition they brought home two tournament trophies - first place in Mt. Pleasant Tournament and second In the Dainger- field Tournament. Coach Dick RJttman’s Lions continued their victory march in conference play. Having secured the top position in the district comparatively early In the season, they continued their march forward. They completed the district competition with a 11-1 record, their only defeat coming when the team was hampered by the sidelining of 3 star players. This record easily gave New Boston the Class AA District Championship for the first time in history. The team's leading scorers are David McCright with an average of 20 points per game and Boyce Grider with a 17 point average. Buddy Alford, William Stone, Red Holt, Frank Looney, and Frank Cox played outstanding defensive ball the entire season. Other members of the team include Billy Tuck, Tommy Sowell, Chester Pinkham, and Dusty Grimes. On February 21, the Lions journeyed to Mt. Pleasant for the Bi-District play-off with Hughes Springs. The game belonged to the Lions all the way. Turning in their top defensive perform- ance of the season, the Lions held the Mustangs to only 8 field goals. When the game ended the Lions had captured the BI-District Championship by a score of 44 to 38. The following week-end the Lions traveled to Denton for the Regional play-offs. They downed Cooper 45-26 in die preliminary game. In a close battle that night with Jacksboro, the Lions managed to take the Regional Championship by a score of 35-33. They are now eligible to enter the state play-offs. The boys and Coach Rittrnan are certainly to be congratulated for their successful season. BOYCE GRIDER FRANK LOONEY FRANK COX GOOBER TEAM Coach Albert Sutton's Goober League Team, which li compoied of Freshmen, cer- tainly consists of a group of talented, well-trained boys. This year for the second con- secutive time they have captured the District Championship in their division. During the past two sessions, they have compiled a remarkable 37-2 record finishing both ses- sions undefeated in conference play. The team has averaged 50 points a game while holding their opponents to an average of 28. Since they have played teams from not only AA but AAA and AAAA schools, this record seems even more outstanding. The team1 leading scorers are Gerald Turner with an average of 17 points per game and Jimmy Curtis with an average of 15 points per game. Jimmy Vinson has also con- tributed greatly to the scoring. Outstanding on defense for the team are Steve Murdock, Bill Wynne, and Kenneth Banks, Other members of the team include; John Martlndaie, James Sermans, Byron Eubanks, George Hill, Dan Shelton, Richard Thompson, and Joe Higgenborham, Manager.
