irxieciviveneij over the mini and maxi of it all found American women dressed in pantsuits as a compromise. At year's end it looked like the mini would survive. Tall and green-eyed Miss Puerto Rico captivated the judges and New York City in winning the Miss Universe title. This demonstrator of the opposite sex saw a little bit of good for all in the women's liberation drive. Tom Dempsey of pro-football's New Orleans Saints kicked a record 62-yard field goal against Detroit. Death claimed two prominent figures in world politics, former president Charles DeCaulle of France and Egypt's president Gamal Nasser. National guardsmen were called to Kent State University to quell campus disorders. Fou- students were killed in the encounter. Photos United Press International A year to remember. . . But, as time went on, the events began to unfold. In May, 1967, as eighth graders we made our first graduation march. Our freshman year was spent with Mr. Jatho as our sponsor. As sophomores, we were again sponsored by Mr. Jett. Dur- ing this period we established the old-fashioned box supper as a new money-making project of the Class of '71. We gave one also during each of the next two years. Junior activities for the class took place under the sponsorship of Miss Brenda Bang (now Mrs. Scheperle) and Mrs. Barbara Kussow, who was replaced by Mrs. Vaughn second semester. In No- vember, we presented Spring Prom Magic. In December, we introduced the new, rather astound- ing junior tradition of throwing our Christmas tree out the third-story English room's window. In May we sponsored the Junior-Senior Trip to St. Louis, where we visited the zoo and Busch Bavar- ian Brewery, and watched the Cardinals get beat by the Astros. Our busy senior year was spent with Mr. and Mrs. Gary Scheperle as our sponsors. In April we presented The Boarding House Reach as our Senior play. Hobo Day and Dress-Up Day were among our May activities which were topped off by the Junior-Senior Banquet and a trip to the Lake of the Ozarks and a cruise on the Larry Don. Baccalaureate was held on May 16 and on May 20 twenty seniors received that long-awaited high school diploma. We would like to thank every parent, teacher, and friend who helped turn those scared first grad- ers into the young men and women who graduated that night. May God help us get through these next years as happily. The (en seniors that went all twelve years together. During the bonfire a replica of Eugene's mascot, the eagle, was thrown into the fire. Cheers and chants were sung to give everybody spirit. Also, the A-team boys and Coach Ratcliff were given gifts to show their strength and ability. Immediately following the bonfire a dance was held in the school gym featuring New Bloomfield's new hot semi-Rock and Blues band, the Purple Haze. Then on Friday afternoon a parade was held which included the retiring Homecoming Queen, the 1971 queen candidates. New Bloomfield and Ashland bands, the basketball players, Mayor Dorsey V. Guy, the Pep Club Sponsor, and many other organi- zations. The next Sophomore candidate was Cynthia Schreen escorted by Mike Hasselman. She wore a pink empire waist gown made of pink sheer nylon and embroidered with pink, yellow, and white flowers. The first Junior candidate was Glenda Hewitt escorted by Jeffrey Siegel. Glenda, the daughter of Mrs. Margie Hewitt, is a cheerleader, a member of the newspaper staff. Student Council, and the girl's sextet. She also plays on the softball team. Glenda wore a gown of shell pink satin with a fitted bodice. The Coronation was held between the B and A games on Feb- ruary 12th which were both victories to which the Wildcats were host to the Eugene Eagles. The Master of Ceremonies, Barry Backer, gave a brief introduction of each candidate as she walked in. The first candidate was Lynn Gastineau escorted by Greg Keesee. Lynn, a Sophomore, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gastineau. Her activities include cheerleading, the newspaper staff, basketball, softball, band, and the Library Club. Sharon, the daughter of Mrs. Mattie Murray, spends many of her free hours during and after school working in the school office. She wore a yellow formal of sheer Georgette over taffeta with a slightly raised waistline topping off the slim A-line sil- houette styled skirt. Then the curtains were opened to reveal the retiring 1970 Home- coming Queen, Karen Scrivner, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Scrivner. Queen Karen came forward to take her last walk as Homecoming Queen. Followed by the flower girl, Trisha Haymart the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Haymart, and the crown bearer, Bryan West the son of Mr. and Mrs. David West, Queen Karen met her escort, Randy Gastineau, at the steps. She passed through the arch made of multi-color tissue paper as the 1971 queen candidates had done and came to the front. Her reign was just a few minutes from being over. The evening started off with a banquet at the Meadow Lake Acres Country Club. We enjoyed a fine meal prepared and served by Chef Robert Reuter and his staff. After the meal attention was turned to the New Bloomfield gymnasium and the Crystal Pistol. A fine evening was enjoyed by all in the delightful atmosphere created by the decorating job of the juniors. We know that this Prom will be long remembered, as it was the first in New Bloomfield history. G D STEAK HOUSE ARRIS' PIZZA PALACE JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI 65101 DON CURE CONSTRUCTION CO.
