THE BEACON 1970 New Bloomfield High School New Bloomfield, Missouri The Annual King and Queen of 1969-1970 open the doors to N. B.H.S. They wish to guide you on a memory tour through the events of the past year. This Annual is packed full of joy, sorrow, fun, and humor which we wish to share with you. 2 Peace, by definition, is the freedom from war, strife, or dissension. It is a cause which everyone believes in and a part of everyone's dream of a better world. It is a wonder which we should all strive to make a more commonplace thing in our uncertain world. It is to this cause that we, the Seniors of 1970, dedicate this Beacon. 3 Reflections of a Magic Year Faculty, Staff, Administration Page 5 Athletics Page 39 Underclassmen Page 63 Activities Page 15 Grades Page 51 ' Advertising Page 91 Seniors Page 75 Administration Directs School Mr. Dorsey V. Homecbming week activities began on Tuesday with the voting for the Queen by the student body. On Wednesday, February 18, the bonfire was held. The highlight of the bonfire was the throwing in of Blair Oaks' mascot. Homecoming festivities continued Friday, February 20, at 2:00 p.m. with a parade. The parade had 29 units consisting of school bands from New Bloomfield, Russellville, and Ashland, the Retiring Queen, the 1970 Queen Candidates, the A and B Teams, and several local organizations and businesses. The climax of the Homecoming activities came Fri- day night. The chosen theme, Love Is Blue was en- graved in a blue tissue heart which stood behind the Queen's chair. Two beautiful blue and white entrance arches were placed on the edge of the stage at the top of the stairs. At the end of the B game was the time for the annual event to take place. The coronation ceremony be- gan by the announcement of the reigning Queen, Lana Scrivner, who was escorted by Larry Jones. After giving a brief speech, Lana walked to the center of the gym. They were followed by Adrienne Dawson, the flower girl and Bradley Lee, the crownbearer. The 1970 Royalty followed. Bill Palmer announced each candidate and gave a summary of her activities while Wanda Boyer played Love Is Blue softly in the background. The girls appeared as follows: Freshman Candidate-Lynn Gastineau, escorted by Leroy Wade; Sophomore Candidate-Karen Scrivner, escorted by Randy Gastineau; Junior Candidate-Mary Lynes, escorted by George Brooks; Senior Candidate-Brenda Jones, escorted by James Nagel; and AU- School Candidate-Becky Underwood, escorted by Greg Keesee. Tension rose as each runner-up was announced and presented a white mum engraved with a blue chenille heart by the Retiring Queen. Queen Karen was then crowned by the Retiring Queen, her sister. Richard Childs, Co-Captain then placed the royal cape on Queen Karen and Bruce Schuster, Captain followed with the presentation bouquet of mums and a kiss. The attendants followed the Queen to their places on the stage while Mike Hasselman sang Love Is Blue. The 1970 Queen and her court reigned over the A game. A Homecoming dance was held after the game, at which Aesop's Fables played. This made a perfect ending to a lovely evening----------Homecoming 1970! Pep Club Boosts School Spirit This year's Pep Club was a vast improvement over previous years. To insure that only dedicated mem- bers joined the organization, a membership fee of $2.50 was required, which bought a pin and sweat- shirt for the club member. Sponsored by Mrs. Rosemary Doyle and Mrs. Toni Link, the eighty-five Pep Club members elected George Brooks, President; Debbie Cain, Vice-President; Lois McKim, Secretary; and Roger Claypool, Treasurer of their organization. Besides giving our basketball players fine support, the Pep Club spcpsored this year's Homecoming and Parade on February 20th. Expenses for these acti- vities were paid |f or by money made from the conces- sion stand at basketball games, a Chili Supper in November, and k sale of school-colored ink pens to the student bod) Pep Club Sponsors: Mrs. Toni Link and Mrs. Rosemary Doyle 45 KNEELING: Paul Crawford, Gary Sundermeyer, Tommy Smith, Fred Keesee, Dale Miller, Bruce Pearre, Bobby Colter, Chuck Cheney, and Steve Colter. Class History In the fall of 1958, twenty-four scared and curious first-graders enrolled in New Bloomfield School. Miss Josie Fleming, our very capable teacher, guided us through the first year of a twelve year voyage, a voyage whose goal was a diploma. In 1966, thirty-eight green freshmen began our journey through high school with our sponsor, Mrs. Carolyn Lumar. The following year, thirty-one sophomores returned, sponsored by Mr. Terry Jett. ’’You're Only Young Once” was presented by a class of twenty-eight juniors in 1968. Mrs. Nancy Garza and Mr. Gary Scheperle, class sponsors, directed the play. With the money we earned, we took the seniors to St. Louis for Junior-Senior Day. We spent the day at St. Louis Botanical Gardens and shopping downtown. That evening, we dined at Miss Hullin's and watched the St. Louis Baseball Cardinals defeat San Diego. Our twelfth and final year arrived in the fall of 1969. A class of twenty-one graduating seniors pre- sented Hillbilly Weddin,” directed by our class sponsors, Mrs. Rosemary Doyle and Mr. Gary Scheperle. We enjoyed our senior activities which included Hobo Day, Dress-Up Day, Senior Day, and Graduation. We are sorry to leave behind these Memories and old friends, but we are eager to meet the challenges and responsibilities of life. With these mixed feelings, we wish to thank everyone—each teacher, sponsor, parent, or friend—who has helped us obtain our most valuable education. The path to our goal was fun, but there were also tears along the way. There were questions of tradition — should we do it differently, or keep it as it has always been? There were questions of finance — is there enough money or isn't there? There were moments of panic — will we meet the copy deadlines? A vote of thanks goes to our advisor, Mrs. Robert Lane, along with the rest of the faculty who cooperated so nicely through class interruptions and picture taking. But to you, the honored ones who lived this wonderful year, we present this book. To you, who waited and watched and took part as vast changes were made. In a way, we feel that this is our book, a gift to you, who lived the parts in this year's pro- duction. This book is not for today, but for tomorrow when 1970 is not so easy to look back on. This NBHS Beacon is now part of history, a book of wonderful memories for you, a won- derful student body.
