Highlights The 1968-69 school year started on September 3. We started the year with a new superintendent, Mr. Guy, and a new principal, Mr. Liley. Other new members of the faculty were Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Suttles, Mr. Scheperle, and Mr. Pollock. A new class, family living, was started for the first time. October was not very busy except for Chorus Clinic on the 30th. However, on November 1st, the basketball season began and things began to perk up with a win at Tuscumbia. On Saturday, Novem- ber 2nd, the band went up to Band Day at Columbia. The first band concert was held on November 4th. The first vacation of the school year was on November 7th and 8th when the annual teacher’s meeting was held at Kansas City. The 16th was the date of the junior play, You’re Only Young Once. December was very busy including the Conference Tourney held at Vienna on the 3rd-7th, the Pep Club Chili Supper on the 11th, and the Christmas program on the 16th. Also, during the week of December 16th-21st, the basketball boys played in the Linn Tournament. The Christmas vacatio was from December 20th to January 2nd. With the beginning of a new year, N.B.H.S. became busier than ever. On January 8th the bonfire was held with the Homecoming game and dance being held on the 10th. On January 24th, the sopho- more class had a box supper. January 28th-February 1st was the South Callaway Tourney at Mo- kane. At the end of the first semester, Mrs. Nelson left to join her husband, and we gained a new teacher, Mrs. Lambeth. During February there were many more ball games with the Regional Tournament ending the sea- son on February 24th through 28th. March was also hectic with Band Clinic on the 22nd, District contests at Kirksville on the 26th, which we were unable to attend because of bus trouble, and Dis- trict Music Contests at Mexico. April was another active month with Basketball Banquet on the 12th, Senior Dress-Up Day on the 18th, and Band Banquet on the 26th. On May 2nd, the senior class play, The Scarlet Shadow, was presented. Other activities near the end of school were Jr. -Sr. Day, Hobo Day, Senior Day at the Lake, Baccalaureate, Commence- ment, and Eighth Grade Graduation. These and other activities helped to make our year enjoyable. Left to Right: Donald Sweet- en, Jack Maddox, Alden L. Schuster, Nelson Dozier, Harry Palmer, and Walter (Buddy) Clark. 6
