During that time she has helped us through two class plays, various senior activities, and gradu- ation. To her, we dedicate this yearbook in appreciation for what she has done for us. 4 Highlights The 1968-69 school year started on September 3. We started the year with a new superintendent, Mr. Guy, and a new principal, Mr. Liley. Other new members of the faculty were Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Suttles, Mr. Scheperle, and Mr. Pollock. A new class, family living, was started for the first time. October was not very busy except for Chorus Clinic on the 30th. However, on November 1st, the basketball season began and things began to perk up with a win at Tuscumbia. On Saturday, Novem- ber 2nd, the band went up to Band Day at Columbia. The first band concert was held on November 4th. The first vacation of the school year was on November 7th and 8th when the annual teacher’s meeting was held at Kansas City. The 16th was the date of the junior play, You’re Only Young Once. December was very busy including the Conference Tourney held at Vienna on the 3rd-7th, the Pep Club Chili Supper on the 11th, and the Christmas program on the 16th. Also, during the week of December 16th-21st, the basketball boys played in the Linn Tournament. The Christmas vacatio was from December 20th to January 2nd. With the beginning of a new year, N.B.H.S. became busier than ever. On January 8th the bonfire was held with the Homecoming game and dance being held on the 10th. On January 24th, the sopho- more class had a box supper. January 28th-February 1st was the South Callaway Tourney at Mo- kane. At the end of the first semester, Mrs. Nelson left to join her husband, and we gained a new teacher, Mrs. Lambeth. During February there were many more ball games with the Regional Tournament ending the sea- son on February 24th through 28th. March was also hectic with Band Clinic on the 22nd, District contests at Kirksville on the 26th, which we were unable to attend because of bus trouble, and Dis- trict Music Contests at Mexico. April was another active month with Basketball Banquet on the 12th, Senior Dress-Up Day on the 18th, and Band Banquet on the 26th. On May 2nd, the senior class play, The Scarlet Shadow, was presented. Other activities near the end of school were Jr. -Sr. Day, Hobo Day, Senior Day at the Lake, Baccalaureate, Commence- ment, and Eighth Grade Graduation. These and other activities helped to make our year enjoyable. Left to Right: Donald Sweet- en, Jack Maddox, Alden L. Class History It all began in the fall of 1957, when eighteen scared and vivacious first-graders en- rolled in the New Bloomfield School. Miss Jose Fleming guided us through that first year and ivas the one who started us toward our ultimate goal—a diploma. In 1965, thirty green freshmen began the journey through high school with our spon- sor, Mrs. Ann Stokes. Then in 1967, twenty-eight sophomores returned again to New Bloomfield with Mrs. Elaine Deiter as the class sponsor. Tune in on Terror was presented by fourteen juniors in 1968 and directed by our sponsor, Mrs. Rosemary Doyle. With the money we earned from the play, the juniors took the seniors to St. Louis for Junior-Senior Day. During the day we shopped down- town and in the evening we dined at the Forum and viewed Gone With the Wind . The year we had been looking forward to finally arrived. The class of 1969 had com- pleted our voyage with twenty-three graduating seniors. Mrs. Rosemary Doyle re- turned once again as our sponsor along with Mrs. Sharon Nelson, first semester, and Mrs. Virginia Lambeth, second semester. Each senior leaves New Bloomfield High with mixed emotions, but there will always be a feeling of sadness as each class mem- ber recalls the wonderful memories of New Bloomfield. The senior class play, The Scarlet Shadow , Hobo Day, Senior Day, and Graduation are only a few of the mem- orable events that will remind us of our high school days at New Bloomfield. There is also a feeling of happiness as we see the future ahead and all the possibilities of our dreams and plans coming true. In all sincerity, the class of 1969 would like to thank everyone—each parent, teacher, and schoolmate—who has aided us in obtaining this vital education. Those five were then voted on by the student body in order to choose the queen. On Wednesday, January 8, the Homecoming activities started with a bonfire and snake dance. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Queen, Lana Scrivner, senior candidate. Friday, January 10, was the highlight of a victorious season. After winning 11 games, with 4 losses, everyone was in a great mood for Homecoming, and all did their share in making the decorations beautiful. The chosen theme, The Sweetheart Tree, was car- ved in red and white. A huge white tree stood behind the queen’s throne, with her name on a red heart and each of the attendants names in red glitter. Two potted plants were on either side of the throne and a red ribbon connected each of the attendant’s chairs. At the half of the A team's game, Wanda Boyer played the piano as the reigning queen, Christina Smith, escorted by Mike Hassleman, walked to the center of the gym. They were followed by Lori Trammell, the crownbearer. The 1969 Homecoming royalty followed. Leroy Wade announced each of the attendants and gave a summary of their activities while Renner Bryan guided the spotlight on each girl as she was escorted through the darkened gym to take her place before the audience. First came Charlotte Bell, senior attendant, escorted by Hudson Wilson. Then Debbie Bell, freshman attend- ant, escorted by Jeff Pickard was followed by the Sophomore attendants, Becky Under- wood, escorted by Donnie Custard and Virginia Straw, escorted by Robbie Brooks. Fi- nally, Lana Scrivner, escorted by Richard Robinson, came to the center of the gym to be crowned Homecoming Queen of 1969. After the crowning by Christina Smith, a bou- quet of red roses was presented to the Queen by Larry Jones. Marla Guy sang the theme song, The Sweetheart Tree. After the ceremony, the queen and attendants were escorted to their places on the stage to reign over the second half of the ball game. A homecoming victory dance was held after the game, at which the Uptown Colony played. This made the perfect ending to a lovely evening--Homecoming 1969.
